Default Shifter won’t move out of park

95 xjs 2+2 shifter won’t come out of park - starts and runs great and last drive no transmission issues.

*brake light was on now off - oops back on
*checked all fuses I could think of
*removed top plate that covers shift linkage but can see no slot to get past brake lock (sure I’m not using the correct language here - Sorry)

there is one weird thing the AC blower motor seems involved in some way?? I try to shift & blower motor comes on -the top was down & interior got soaked so wondering if some kind of moisture short

Any ideas? or basic info or diagrams that might be helpful?

Also where is the brake light switch and solenoid?

Thanks,
Shannon

Hi Shannon

There are lots of things it could be but the first thing I would try is to rock the Car back and forth, as if there is a load on the Pawl, then it could get Stuck in Gear

After that check the Vacuum Pipe from the Inlet Manifold to the Modulator on the Side of the Transmission, it may have somehow come adrift or even have a leak and then while you're down there check the Linkage

I'm not a tranny expert but other more informed suggestions I'm sure will be coming your way, from Greg/Grant/Doug/ptjs

Shannon,

I'd be looking first at the brake interlock switch as this is very possibly the reason that you can't move out of Park.

Good luck

Paul

Remove the two tiny screws on either end of the selector cover(cover with the brush seal). On the forward end near where the forward screw was, is a guided hole that goes down to the interlock pawl. Stick a #1` Phillips screwdriver tip or similar size tool down in the hole to release the interlock actuator arm. This will allow you to move the gear selector now.
Mine was intermittent but do not think it was the actuator. I disabled the actuator by wire tying the arm away from the lever so it will never lock.
As the PTJS1 said, check to see if the brake switch on the pedal arm is actuating the interlock solenoid(listen). If not see if the brake switch is actually being actuated too (brake lights).
