Default Stuck in park intermittently

My 94 XJS occasionally sticks in park and I can't shift out of it. I have found if I restart the motor it will then allow me out of park. Any ideas what might be behind this quirk??

Thanks.

Assuming that you are not parked on a hill when this occurs, this can cause difficulties in shifting out of park if the handbrake is not applied first.

Check the park micro switch is properly connected and positioned (it's on the front of shifter assembly)

Check the connections on the gear shift solenoid and control module, also on the assembly)

Check for any foreign matter that might be hindering the movement of the parking pawl, clean and lubricate as necessary.

Cheers,

Allan

Also check the foot brake switch as it will not move unless the brake is sensed to be on. You should hear a click when in park as you press and release the foot brake.

Thanks for the information. I am really new to this, so I will grab a Haynes manual to identify where and what the parts are. Any suggestions on how to test the solenoid etc.

Thanks

Here is what I was able to find when I had the same problem.
Hope this helps.
The second attachment tells you how to shift out of Park if the problem isn't fixed.
In the end, I just gave the switch a couple of good taps with a screwdriver handle. That was last summer.....no problems since.

Thanks for the awesome info, Bill. The drawings and explanation were exactly what I needed. Now I just need to find a bit I time to work on it .
