Brake/Tranny clicking

Brake/Tranny clicking
Had my 2002 X-type for 2 months and love it, except for the one cupholder! However, today whenever I pushed on the brake pedal (any gear or neutral on my auto transmission) a loud click sound would come from the area of the shifter. Didn't matter whether stopped, moving, slow or fast, pushing brake pedal hard or soft....Any guesses on what this can be?

Just speaking wildly. is it the transmission/brake inter-lock? You know the change that all the car makers made to prevent the run away Audi problem...
Without your foot on the brake can you shift from P to D? ================================================

The problem is the park lock solenoid in the j-gate. There is a switch that lets the car know its in park. Over time the contacts get dirty and it still thinks its in park when its not. The clicking is the solenoid releasing the lock to let you shift out of park. To fix it, replace the switch. Do a search on here and you'll find many posts on here about this problem. I was able to clean and rebuild my switch and its still holding 10,000 miles later.

If its clicking, its not a broken solenoid. To replace that would not solve your problem as the clicking means that its working just fine. Its the park switch separate from the solenoid that is your problem. Some have reported that you have to buy a new J-gate just to get the switch but I'm sure with a little resourcefulness, you could find one, use something similar or just clean the one you already have. The last option (cleaning) is a little tricky but not impossible by any means.

It sounds much worse than it is. Basically you just have to pop off the trim around your shifter (pops up and off really easily), unscrew the shift knob and remove a few torx head screws under the trim. You can take the top of the shifter off really easily and the switch is right in there. You'll see it as the shifter will contact it in park. A couple of wires run to it from down below. It's really an easy job. Nothing to sweat at all.
