Just wondering which one may be the cause of the bottom of the car hitting the road when i go over a dip in the road. Not a good sound.........just not sure which needs replacing. Its the rear hitting for sure...1988 xjs....tks

If the springs are weak the back end might be sagging a bit.

XJSs don't have a lot of ground clearance to begin with. How big is the dip?

Are you sure the back of the car is actually hitting? Could it be a noise from something else....like an exhaust pipe? Or...?

BTW, the XJS doesn't have 'struts'.

Cheers
DD

Greg, I concur exhaust may be the culprit...if the mid car joint is loose the whole assembly can rotate and drag. Another potential cause is the transmission mount. If the spring and central spool are worn a 'whole car dip' can cause the trans to bounce but leave no evidence when you look under the car later. Guess how I know...!?

If you get the car on axle stands (apply caution!) or better, a lift, try manually moving the rear of the trans to see how loose it is.

Definitely bottom of car hitting road, dips in the road are not really huge but if the dip makes the cars rear end bounce to much it will usually scrape. Think it may be the shocks ......springs..... ???????

Yes, the shocks and springs have had it. A new set of Boges and springs will fix it back to factory spec ride quality. In the Uk this is the sort of thing
JAGUAR DAIMLER REAR SHOCK ABSORBERS FITS XJ6 XJ12 XJS CAC9091 X 4 | eBay
and
Jaguar XJS Rear Springs (SET OF 4) C39692 | eBay
or ready assembled
JAGUAR XJS REAR SHOCK ABSORBERS & SPRING ASSEMBLY SET OF 4 CAC9091B C39692 | eBay

Beware aftermarket non Boge shocks if you want to preserve the legendary Jaguar ride!
