Should I remove the rubber flaps from the Fan Shroud? XJS V12
Having just cleaned the 'Fan Shroud' of my XJS V12 down to Bare Metal and given it a (Temporary Coating) of Grease to preserve it until it gets painted.
I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on removing the 'Rubber Flaps' in this Fan Shroud.
Just wondering if their removal would help to aid cooling or maybe have the opposite affect.

I think that the flaps are there for when you are driving slowly; they stay shut so that all the air goes through the fans. As you speed up they open and allow more air through but I don't know how much difference they make.
my flaps where all curled and not sealing when slow or idling, engine started to heat up.
so i sealed them off and i have no problems with heat slow or fast, i also did away with the mechanical fan and installed a good electric fan, blows fast even setting still.

Cheers but I don't know either.
Thanks but I want to keep the fan as it is for the moment, at least until I know if this Car (XJS V12) will start after standing outside for 15 years!
Miracles do happen but this might be really pushing the envelope.
I believe that the flaps act as check valves. At hi speed the air flows thru. At low speed or idle it keeps the fan from sucking air thru the flap area instead of thru the rad.
If you are maintaining the Mechanical engine driven fan, AND, the LH agitator fan, the flaps are a MUST.
Renew them. The mob you got those o/rings from probably have suitable material.
They are indeed a "air check" system of rather crude design, but it works.

When the Rad is the right way round, the flaps seem to close OK but if I've got any doubts about that I will renew them.
I get what they do now.
808 maybe i did not explain properly , i blocked the flap vents completly shut.
when my main fan comes on by electric thermostat, the small fan comes on also, so ALL the air flow is thru the complete radiator!
for my car it cools very well, never overheats or ever goes above 185F in hot texas temps ,100+ sometimes, i have a digital readout monitor always on!
OB. Run the electric fan and see if the flaps close while running. If they close then they are fine. I would not block them closed as it restricts air flow at hi speed. If they dont close find a similar rubber product and replace them.
They always worked perfect before, its just that they look a bit out of kilter, with the Fan Shroud stood on end for the photo.

In your original photo the header tank looks pretty rusty. Maybe it is sound, but take a careful look as you do not want that letting go !
Second question, with everything out, have you considered chnaging the OEM electric fan for an aftermarket more efficient one? Straight swap, no change at all to wiring or functionality. easy to do and to fix onto the shroud with the shroud out. Makes a very big difference to the cooling! Of course, I quite understand if you want to keep your lovely red car 100% OEM.

Great Idea!
But this 'potentially' lovely red Car has been sat outside in all weathers for 15 years!
I don't even know if She will even turn over let alone start, so that's one thing I need to know before I start throwing any money at her.
Though should a miracle happen, then I will be asking you where I can get one.
I'm curious as to what grease you used to temporarily protect the shroud.
I recommend pork fat and leaving it on; that way, should the car start to overheat you will get a lovely smell of frying bacon to warn you of impending disaster!

But since you're asking, I used a can of Spray Grease from the Pound Shop.
Anyway you don't know what you're missing!
Sunday lunch with the 'Outlaws' round, a nice bottle of Chilled Chablis and a Bargain Bucket, absolute heaven!
