Default Should you drive with a Full Tank of Petrol/Gas?

Safety aspects to one side.

I was wondering how much difference it might possibly make, in both Terms of Speed and Acceleration.

To drive with half a Tank of Petrol/Gas instead of filling her up as I do at the moment.

If memory serves, a gallon of gas weighs about 6.7 pounds. Assuming you've got a 20 gallon tank, and you want to drive around with it half full (or half empty, depending on how you're feeling), you'll be saving 67 pounds. On a 4300 pound car......I don't think you'll notice the difference.

Hi Bill

I always like to keep the Tank full, as I thought it might affect the Cornering with all that Fuel sloshing around in a half empty tank (Paranoid me!)

And since the only Petrol I use, is 'Tesco Momentum' it saves me have to look around for a Garage that sells it, if we go on a long Trip.

Wow, that meets any definition of minutia !!!

But, I think, weight plays a part on overcoming inertia. But, once done, plays only a small part, if any.

But. added weight might even help in getting user way, fast. Added traction!!!

I suspect slosh s controlled within the tank.

And, the undefined. The comfort of a full tank....

Hi Carl

An awful lot of truth in your last comment, though maybe not for the reason you were thinking.

Handing over Ł100+ for a Tank full of Petrol/Gas that will only last me two or three days, tends to really concentrate the mind.

Since I don't trust my gas gauge and it reads 3/4 full when I fill the tank I would prefer to keep it full. I admit I need to get used to the car and how fast it empties the tank but in general I never like to have less than a quarter tank on any car.

I get it. At one time gas was over $4.00 a US gallon. Roughly about $8.00 bucks!!!!.

So, once full, pain kicked down the road. A comforting feeling.

Antithesis: I've been in situations when the guage shows empty and any refuel is far down the road, if at all.

Circa 1948, three kids, me included, decided on making some money on Christmas tree sales. We added sides to our trailer. Tied it on to my well worn 37 Ford V8 Fordor and off to the mountains. We bought cutting rights for 50 bucks. Never been sure of that deal. Started back after an afternoon of chopping. No chain saws then, just teen muscle. Dark, gravel only back roads of New Mexico. Drive in lower gears to get light to see by, sorta. Tank looking close to empty....

Wow, stopped at a lighted cabin. A ranch house!!! Rancher gave us some tractor gas. Refused payment. Just the way of life... Car parked purposely down slope. Crank potential not good. Let it get some speed coasting and popped into gear. The old V8 fired with a roar. Off we go.

Dawn came. we are still in the back country, but now in the desert. Hungry!!1
We came to a crossing. A few houses!!! Café, no. But, one fellow said a lady down the road could feed us for a fee. OK!!!! Yup, she had venison hash. biscuits, eggs and coffee. Delicious.....
