Default Side Mirrors

Hey All,

I need to replace a broken side mirror, and since this topic came up, I thought I'd post this separately.

Here's a pic of the broken mirror:

You can see the damage to the glass, and it's not obvious, but the whole mirror seems to sag to the left a bit compared to the right-hand mirror.

The right-hand mirror is okay, and the electric motors work all the way around. However, both mirrors have the awful fish-eye stickies on them; I'm assuming that is not stock.

In order to save the right-hand mirror, I'm tempted to try Goo Gone and dental floss. Any other suggestions?

Hi Kurt

Welcome to the forums...... your car looks like a good place to start with XJSes.

The fisheyes are not stock...... they should come of with some alcohol, or goo gone as you suggested.

If your mirror electrics are working, I'd try to cheat and find a new mirror glass that is the same size and just stick it over the broken one..... you'd never know to look at it.

Yes, my mirrors also kind of droop...... I've just gotten used to it

Like like a nice ride Kurt.
My '94 has the "fish-eyes" as well, and the droop.
Just like Sarc, I've gotten used to it.

I remove the 'fish eyes' by fishing line. Just run the line behind the mirror and pull down or sideways. They will come off and then use goo-gone or paint thinner to remove the mess.
These mirrors have a problem rusting around the push nut inside th mount. My left one was sagging and I took the two mounting screws out and turned the mirror upside down and filled the cavity around the shaft with RTV. Left it over night and all is well now.

Incidentally I use the small round 1.25 inch fisheyes on my SJS. I don't like the kind shown in Kurtomatic's post. Not stock, I know but it is a safety thing.

Thanks for the suggestions, folks. Once I get past the immediate mechanical issues, I want to take this thing off and get a good look at it.

I happen to know a guy with a glass shop, he makes all kinds of crazy stuff. Hmm...
