I ordered some replacement calipers for my 94 (made in 93) XJS. But the replacments weren't close. The listing stated I believe 1976-94 ...so I'm at late 93, 94 ish...these should fit. Here is a pic...so what's going on here? Ok, I did some searching and I appear to have brakes for an XJ6..Why is that? Old vs new
This won’t be very helpful for you but maybe a heads-up for those looking for parts. Rock Auto was unable to supply the correct brake parts for my ’92 XJS (built 6/91) too. And of course when Rock Auto makes a mistake, they expect the customer to pay for it (return shipping for parts they shouldn’t have shipped). I think there has been a loss of information about which parts fit which cars.
It’s best to search by the actual Jaguar part numbers, rather than relying on Rock Auto’s info by choosing year/make/model. I wish you luck in dealing with them.
fortunately I purchased the wrong ones via amazon, so that was an easy return. Rockauto had the correct one...but I had to search for them as an XJ6, but yeah they should have a better description of the outboard vs inboard calipers.
Odd. They sent me wrong parts one time. They paid to have it shipped back to them. I did have to wait for a shipping label from them, but wasn't a big deal.

Maybe because I’m in Canada? The first time, a couple of years ago, they wanted me to agree to half of the return shipping, which I did so they gave me a label. That was for an alternator that did not physically fit in my XJS. But for the brake parts they wanted me to pay 100%, though again the fault was entirely theirs. I refused and got a refund by contacting Visa. The weird thing was, they got the front rotors wrong (and the flexible brake hoses) as well as the rears. But it was their “customer service” that made me swear never to shop there again.
I've had good luck with Rock Auto service over the years. But, yes, if there's a problem, they've put me through a couple extra steps that I didn't exactly appreciate. They've never stiffed me, though.
I also buy a ton of stuff from Summit Racing. Summit is not just a high-performance store. They sell a broad general replacement parts for a wide variety of cars. Heck, I even bought an XJ6 windshield from them ! Their website cataloging isn't the best so get your part number first and then search it on Summit's webpage.
The beauty of Summit is free shipping over $110 purchase and, importantly, a no-questions-asked return policy. I've never had a problem returning a part. Never.

.
I agree.
As years turn into decades and catalog data bases get rehashed a few times and the info becomes corrupted. Sometimes you'll see the exact same errors over a wide variety of manufacturers and vendors so you know there's a shared data base.
To be a little bit fair, running and mid-year changes have always been a bit more tricky. I've found that Jaguar's own parts catalogs and technical literature sometimes have contradictory information in this regard.
I’ve not received incorrect parts from Rock Auto for any car other than the XJS, so I cooperated with them in providing extra info and even photos to show inboard rears pertaining to my VIN. But yes, they then stiffed me quite deliberately so I threw my three-dozen-plus fridge magnets in the garbage.
