Default XJS and Outboard brakes.

Good afternoon.
am I right in thinking that towards the end of its production life, the XJS moved to outboard brakes as opposed to inboard brakes? Does anyone when the change over was?
Im just trying to identify what a potential purchase should have fitted.
Thank you.

They became available during the 94 model year. Initially, they had solid rear discs. At the so-called 1995.25 changeover, they became ventilated with larger rear calipers and pads. Going to the outboard brakes required a total redesign of the hub/upright, parking brake system, new halfshafts, and minor changes to the differential output flanges.

the car I’m looking at is a very late model so should be outboard I think.

Just out of interest, are there any upgrade items that are interchangeable from the XK8?

They changed to solid outboard brakes at VIN 188105 which is World 1993.5 MY and production commenced in May 1993.

As mentioned, they then upgraded to vented outboard at VIN 198334 which is World 1995.25 MY and production commenced in October 1994

Hope that helps

Paul

Thank you Paul for noting the change came by VIN, MY not a guarantee. My car is registered as a 93, but has a build date of 10/92 and has inboard brakes.

I'm fairly certain there are NO parts that interchange.
Not even wheels and if the center caps fit, they are not as attractive.

The gearknob from an X150 XKR fits on the selector shaft of a late XJS.

I fitted one to my car and obviously the car is now much faster!

I think that added at least 10 horsepower!
