Default Speedo Problem on 'Carmen' 4.0L XJS

Hi Guys

Got a bit of a problem with the Speedo on 'Carmen' my 4.0L Six Cyl XJS that I've never come across before

When I went to Start her up, the needle on the Speedo suddenly went right over to 150 MPH even though the Car was stationary and then the needle stayed there and wouldn't return to Zero when the Car was switched off

Even with the Battery disconnected

Any ideas?

No real idea but perhaps the transducer wiring on the rear half shaft is shorting out?

I’ve had this happen & to get the speedo needle back to zero I had to remove the instrument cluster & whilst holding it, rotate it through 180 degrees anti clockwise to get the needle vertical & then rotate it another 90 degrees anti clockwise to get the needle back to zero. Mine was related to having the battery discharge over a period of time & then reconnecting a charged battery & turning on the ignition - AKA just one of those things!

HTH

Hi Andy

Same thing seems to have happened with mine!

Battery went flat, put on a New Battery, Speedo went right over to 150 mph and Stayed there!

When you say rotate the Instrument Cluster, did you mean the whole 'Binnacle' or take the Speedo out of the Cluster first?

It sound like you meant the whole Cluster but just want to double check

You should only rotate the whole cluster by the light of a full moon when Uranus is ascending.
Or you could just roll it into a ditch.

I just removed & rotated the whole cluster - no need to remove the speedo itself from the cluster.
