Default To spoil or not to spoil. Thats the question

So peeps. ...The rear 'spoil'er, what do we think.
The worst thing than the leaper and chrome wheel arches or the nicest addition since sliced bread.......?

I hate that 3rd brake light so l find the spoiler with it definitely looks 100% better. BUT, l would rather see the boot/trunk lid without anything. The spoilers look good on some cars but not the XJS convertible, maybe on the coupe, but....

The late v12's did come out like that from the factory, so this was not an add on, if that's your concern.

I don't think it looks bad necessarily, but I think it makes the car look more modern, specially on a late car with color coded bumpers. One of the things that I really like about my 95 XJS is that it looks like it belongs in the late 70's/early 80's. I don't care for "updating" my cars to look more modern myself. The older my XJS looks, the better.

I admit to really liking the facelift rear spoiler, which I think is a much sleaker design than the pre-facelift spoiler. I think it looks great on both Coupe & Convertible.

And unlike the leaper and chrome arches, it was actually fitted by Jaguar from new on some cars! So, I feel that gives it real credibility!

In the UK, we don't have the rather ungainly (IMO) bootlid 3rd brake light.

I like the facelift spoiler so much that I have an original Jaguar kit with the spoiler that has the in-built brake light. Another thread on here has made me decide to get off my backside and get it fitted this year, after a 10-year wait! Does anyone have the original marking template which shows exactly where to position it?

Paul

From a practical perspective, spoilers do put extra weight on your trunk/bootlid gas struts. Mine can't hold the lid open on a cold day (without a spoiler) so I can imagine how annoying it could be.

I like a nice smooth well formed rear end so . . .
No Spoiler, no emblems and no 3rd light on my '96.

Mkii250,

The Jaguar kit that I have comes with uprated struts to address that weight problem. So, hopefully, I'll be ok.

Hi Paul,

Do you have the part number for the updated struts ?

Lee.

It all a matter of taste…. personally, I prefer the non spoiler look.

At first I thought "Here we go again"!! But this is remarkably more civilized (and less entertaining) than leaper vs. growler, chrome wheel arches, lumps, etc.

No spoiler is my vote, and particularly for the pre facelift models.

[edit]

As I think about it, it feels as though Jaguar were getting just a bit desperate to wring out every last bit of life from the XJS platform:

- weren't there a handful of special editions that were simply colored piping on the seats and some flashy badging
- the body colored bumpers don't look bad, but not quite full integrated with the rest of the car's lines

Does anyone know if the spoiler actually does anything? I mean, on neither the coupé nor the convertible is it in a clean airstream. So is it just a cosmetic thing, or does it produce some realistically useful rear end downforce? Apart from its weight at standstill that is !

I don't have a vote here. No XJS, past or present.

Steve's illustrated post is the best support for no spoiler!!!

The lines of the coupe, tolerate it, sorta. The drop top, nope, especialy with the top down.

Beautiful cars each in it's own way.

And, yeah, what is it's function, if any? Down force? Down force is a critical thing at high speeds. 200 MPH!!! The F1 and Indy car guys know about it. Creat traction at the expense of speed? Critical adjustments.

But, looks is as subjective as it gets.

Chrome wheel arches and side mouldings, ugh. phew what a disgusting thought.

Jag still fussing.

paul's told me if I want to do that (place a spoiler on my convert) to order the newer struts that are on the one that is outfitted with the spoiler.. They are different...

then the emailed me and offered me a "KIT" the trunk lid with spoiler and only the third break light on the spoiler and new struts for $500 US this is so the trunk lid will stay open with the struts and there would be no hole where I removed the orgl. 3rd break light... I thought it was a nice Offer... I am currently buying a new radiator so stuff like that will have to wait...

It is raining here today... had to drive to work with the top up

I like it! I like the way it breaks up the lines of the rear end.

Does it accomplish anything? Most likely not, it's just cosmetics, just like the "flying buttresses" (of which I am also a great fan).

Bill

P.S. I may be biased 'cause my car came with it.

P.P.S. The third brake light may have to go. I'm not a fan of that!

Hey pete, you should hit that thing with a little bit of polishing compound and wax, difference will be night and day!
