Default to trade or not to trade That is the question

Hi all I am not a Jag owner and never have been, however I was a automotive technician for many years and have wrenched on more than a few Jags.
I have a 97 Harley Sportster 1200 for sale or trade. I have an offer of a 93 XJS 6 that a guy wants to trade me. I was hoping someone here could let me know if this is a decent deal or should I look for a better deal.
the only thing they claim is wrong with the car is the drivers power seat he claims he doesn't know whats wrong but suspects a wiring problem.
the thing I will be looking close at is the paint and body as it has been repainted. I would have preferred original paint

here is a link to the car thanks for any advice.
BTW I am asking 3995 for my bike he is asking 5500 for the car which I think he asking too much for . but he offered a straight trade. low end retail on this car is below my asking price but the car seems like its worth it at least on paper.

********1993 JAGUAR XJS VERY NICE************

Well I went to see this XJS and it looked like someone did a poor job prepping for the paint job and it shows, the car doesn't look like it has seen a garage in ten years.
not worth his asking price and not worth my Harley.
Thanks anyways.

Good call; if in doubt, walk away.

I was disappointed, but not surprised. it seems anytime I buy something I have to look at many to find one or two that are as described. I would have much rather bought a car like this with faded scratched original paint. the guy claimed this car was garage kept but I am thinking thats a flat out lie, too much has been rotted on this car and rusted plus the recent crappy paint job, sure sounds like a polished up turd to me.

Bummer, too bad. But keep looking, the right one is out there.

A few years ago, I did a (pretty much) straight swap for mine. Sold my FXSTC for around $7K and bought my XJS for around $7K. Still miss the bike, but still happy with the deal.

Yeah I have always loved the look of Jags any Jags they have always been a real solid well made car that you could get inexpensively once they are used.

Right now I am just looking to trade my Bike or sell it so I can obtain a car for my Mother to drive until her car is fixed and safe to drive.
If somehow I can end up with a Jag that wont give me the feeling my Mother is going to get stranded thats an added bonus.

You didn't lose anything. That Jag had all the signs of a neglected car with stained and dirty interior, damaged leather, damaged wood veneer, etc. all leading to equal mechanical carelessness. Conversely, and as a reference, this forum's members care about their cars and you can derive the cars' solid mechanicals just from the way the cars look. It is a healthy sign and trend.

Too bad we've missed on a new member for now, but as Bill C says, keep looking because there are excellent examples out there and, in the particular case of an XJS, you get so much car for what you pay for that you can hardly go wrong with the right choice.

Cheers,

Yeah, as you like your sportster and don't like the XJS, a trade would not be smart.

If one likes a car, it's warts can be fixed or lived with. If not, no matter how good it is it will not be pleasing. Even if the price is really good.

Swaps are interesting things. Comparitive dollar value is secondary to desire.

Hi Carl

I was just about to say something very similar:

You either want an XJS or you want a Bike!

So as you say its all down to your desire for one or the other, which of course does not mean you should buy the first one you see but if you really want one

and I mean Really Want One.

Then the monetary value of what you want to trade goes out the window!
