For all you transmission experts. Why don't they put a drain plug in the transmission pan?
If you're servicing a transmission, the filter should be changed too and the pan needs to come off for that. I suppose the thinking is if the pan is coming off anyway, just dump the fluid at the same time. Usually this is done at a dealership or repair shop and they have the large catch pans, so there isn't really a need for a separate drain plug. And the factory gets to save a few cents on each car by omitting the drain plug...
Finally, no wonder why this bushings dont last very long, for the beating they get, it's a miracle they go in in one piece! And yes, plenty of beer and swearing... In all languages... How do people using the cotton reel poly bush drive the in, I would really want to know... Transmission filter and pickup tube tomorrow....
How do people using the cotton reel poly bush drive the in,
30 ton press and rubber grease when I did mine but that's what I had, probably doesn't need such capacity rather a way to apply a constant and even pressure. Grease is technically bad where it will be exposed to dust but getting these things in without lube is just self abuse, don't forget the rubber cups for the spring when you put it back and don't use your old spring get a new one appropriately rated for the XJS (they are different), mine had sagged pretty badly. You will likely need to jack the mount into place in order to get the centre bolt that passes through the bushing exposed sufficiently to get the nut on so keep those words you used handy .
Make sure the prop shaft is bolted and tightened because once this mount is on you cannot get to the nuts etc.
To all, the whining noise is gone, o-ring looked fine but the filter was very dirty, both were changed for new ones, the transmission mount bushing was replaced, and the collision bracket is now gone for good. After all a very uncomfortable job, but besides driving the bushing into place, the rest was pretty straightforward... Thanks to all for your advice...
