Default Turn signal not loud enough

As old age creeps up, the never very loud turn signal noise is damn near inaudible. I was considering adding a buzzer, when Paul (PTJS1) told me about a proprietory gizmo that was available, and which made a more normal - for our cars' age - clicking sound. PDF of the press blurb attached. Anyway, I bought one (about 28 UK Pounds from memory) and today with a little sunshine at last, got round to fitting it.
Really pleased, quite loud enough clicking but NOT a nasty pitch, more of a clonking sound. Not at all intrusive; but my days of forgetting to cancel are over, and therefore, Madame will be pleased...
I also attach the wiring diagram for the pre facelift HE cars for reference if anyone wants to do this mod. The gizmo has three wires attached to it: Two signal wires (one for each side's flasher signal) and one earth (ground) wire. These need fitting as follows:
  • one signal wire on the output from the switch to the RH flashers
  • one signal wire on the output from the switch to the LH flashers
  • one earth (ground).
The factory system is so wired that the order of the components is: 12v feed > flasher unit/hazard switch > indicator column switch > one wire exits switch (green with red stripe) to LHS flasher bulbs/one wire exists switch to RHS flasher bulbs (green with WHITE stripe).
So the gizmo's wires must be attached DOWNSTREAM of the switch before the bulbs. It does not matter which of the two switch output wires the signal wires to the gizmo are attached to, as they both send current to the one unit. These signal wires have diodes in each to prevent back feeding of current to the flasher system.
To fit the thing was straightforward: i removed the bottom half of the column shroud (3 screws) just immediately forward of the steering wheel boss; and removed the knee level trim. This gives plenty of access to the indicator switch, and the wires can be identified easily enough. I actually unplugged the switch loom from its connector (about 8 inches down the loom) so I could make the scotchlok join near to the plug, rather than right by the switch itself.
The joins made, I peeled off the self adhesive pad's protector and stuck the gizmo box on the blower casing just below the main fuse holder and used the panel that carries the fuse holder's fixing nut to put the earth on. 3/4 of an hour start to finish.
Highly recommended for the elderly!

Good idea.

I find the X Type LOUD, teh S Type SILENT, never noticed the others, but I, too, was way younger.

I could always end you my old hearing aids in the next parcel, HAHA.

I dont agree with the age reasoning. As you do get older that "selective hearing", we males are all blessed with, just gets better.

Greg... you always come up with "gems". 1 side-thought is where the indicator lights appear on the dash. Nice planning to put them where the steering wheel blocks clear view. Only at night can I see them blinking. Whadda gonna do?

I placed extra repeaters as per this pic; but the reason for the sounder is that in bright sunshine I still do't notice them enough. The extra repeaters are fixed to the plastic blanks under which the screws to remove the binnacle are. They are wired up to the OEM lights in parallel by careful soldering to the fitting that holds the OEM push fit bulb. The extra lights are green plastic and about 3/4 inch long. If you want a close-up let me know.

Another point that has occurred to me is that the loom that comes as part of the buzzer could be hijacked to provide an extra warning light in a far more visible position. As there are diodes in the two 12v feeds from the indicator switch to the sounder, as long as you took 12v from the loom to the sounder DOWNSTREAM of a diode, then either indicator direction would produce 12v for the warning light! So you would only need one extra warning light, that could be easily installed anywhere you wanted, e.g. on the top of the column shroud, which would require very straightforward installation.
