Updating trunk lock
Does anybody know if the electric trunk lock on 89-91 XJS can be adapted to work with an 84 with just a standard lock. My lock's key cylinder refuses to work and I can't find anyone willing to work on it so I am trying to find another way to lock the trunk. I even purchased another lock with cylinder but it doesn't have a key and again I have had no luck finding a locksmith willing to make a key for it. I see that the 89-91 XJSs had power trunk locks and I thought that maybe I could adapt one of those to work using a remote controlled relay to power it. Has anybody else done this or have suggestions on how to go about it.
I'm also open to other suggestions for getting my trunk locked (apart from a Mr Bean type outside padlock).
Thanks

The only difference between the non-central locking and the central locking boot lock is the addition of a powered element to the otherwise standard lock. It is easy to remove this, and easy to change the lock to key only. If you remove the plastic lock cover all this is obvious.
I would just buy a boot lock and key from a breaker, or off UK ebay. e.g.

This link might help...
There are a few things to look out for.
I had a devil of a time finding the individual bits and pieces needed to go back from what a PO had done, making a fix to the boot lock. I guess the first thing ya might want to see is whether or not the are electrics in the boot, on the trunk lid, ready to accept a central electrical lock set up.
My intention was to first sort out the lock situation, then go ahead and install a aftermarket simple remote alarm with fob,,, but I haven't don't that yet. Today, I'm glad to say that with turn of the drivers door key, everything locks and unlock simultaneously with lock and unlock of the drivers door - about 90% of the time. Sometimes it's a little fussy and I need to turn the key 2 or 3 times before the SOLENOIDS figure out what I'm asking them to do.

Then, yup, I had to remove the barrel key lock from my old handle/latch and put it into the "new"... That was a challenge. I think I have some photos of that somewhere if you need and when you get there. My inexperience showed up.
Basically, what was needed was to remove a tight fit style split pin used to secure the key/tumbler/barrel into the handle at which the while lock could slide out of the handle. My ladies jewelry making studio came in well for this. She's a gem...
I really REALLY need to start keeping better notes, better photos, and really need to focus on keeping them all more organized.
