Default V12 grille badge

Hi

The XJ-S is the S-type of the XJ, and my car actually has an S-badge instead of the much more common V12 badge. Anyone else with S-badge ?

I've noted those early XJS "S-Type" ads out there. As an Ad person I can't say they're very well designed, but more to my point they clearly referred to the XJS as the "S-type" at the time. Later the "S-type" appeared and somewhere in between they dropped the "S-type" label for the XJS.

Istanbul not Constantinople.

It's not the S type of the XJ... The S type is always a saloon/sedan, hence the name plate for the last S type. The S means SPORT. So XJ-Sport. In Relation to the XJ-Coupé for the short lived 2 door coupé from the early 70ies.

It could also mean Special but I can't find the source anymore...

Iirc only the 3.6l got the S badge. S for slow Haha... Sorry for the pun!

You're probably right about the S for Sport, but my engine had 12 cylinders last time I looked, and I dont think a PO would have removed the V12 badge... ?

It is a 2 min job to replace the grill...

IIRC your engine was replaced. The grill needs to be removed to do that.

The engine was changed twice: From original preHE to another preHE in 1989 and finally to the current 1989 HE engine in 1996.

I suppose the grille would stay on the bonnet assembly, which then is removed when doing major jobs like this ?

Anyway: If the S-badge is wrong for a V12, then I need to change it, no matter why it has been mounted...

Nope the grill needs to be removed to remove the 4 screws for the bonnet hinges... And as the Grills are just cheap plastic, they tendiere to crack. Wouldn't surprise me if the previous owners fitted a used grill...

I had seen some of these old adds before, and I was therefore thinking, that my S-badge could actually be correct for my 1977 vintage ?

Iirc only the US models were called S-Type. ROW was just XJ-S. Like the E-Type was the XKE in the States and ROW only knew E-Type...

I think you're right regarding the USA market. Oddly, "S-Type" and "XJ-S" were both used in the very same advertising. The "S-Type" identification extended even into the early 80s, at least.....

No mention of "S-Type" in this UK brochure:

Jag-lovers with their passive-aggressive deep link blocking pic amused me this morning.

"Glad you found our image useful! ... so here's a useless pic"

My '96 had the black plastic grille which I have now replaced with an old chrome one, and I specifically got an S badge for it, the V12 wouldn't do for a 6 cyl.
Best I can discern, the S badge was used on the 89-91 6 cyl models, then the grill was changed to the black plastic one with no badge on it.

That is what I had in memory. The V12 always had a V12 badge and the 6 bangers had the S. Why advertise a 6 cylinder if the 12 is the TOTR
