Hey Sonny,
My alternator was not charging the battery when I purchased my '85 XJ-SC. Took the car to an auto-electrician and he started talking about having to remove the front sub-assembly, steering rack, etc, to get to the alternator.
Definitely don't need to do that.
Ended up taking the car to a Jaguar mechanic and they did it for me. Was my first month of V12 ownership, so was way out of my comfort zone at that stage.
Follow the advise of the experts here and you're in good hands. A very helpful group indeed.

Reading through this thread and holy crap, does this look like a nightmare. Normally I rag on new cars (looking at my mothers 2014 Ford Escape) for being very not user friendly to work on. But sometimes I see these and question what the engineers designing these were thinking...
