Default V12 sandwich gasket rear lip oil seal

My friend started replacing gaskets oil pans and rear oil seal today.
I shooted some photos.
Oil is clean and licking not visible. But bolts have drops of oil.

When we removed the transmission and driveplate all become clear.

Rear main cap sealant is leaking.

Not so visible but leaking.

We are so tired. See you tomorrow!

Wow that is a lot of work, are you going to try and replace the rope seal in-place?
Can it even be done?

Mine leaks... maybe a teaspoon on the ground after a run, it would be nice to fix but is it worth the effort?
How much oil was leaking from this engne?

Duke,

Those snaps look like the later engine, as in 1989 onwards. That looks like the full circle rear main seal, which replaced the rope style.

I doubt the rope seal can be replaced, mainly in the block, with the crankshaft in place. The "sizing" required of a new rope seal, with the specified tool, has the crankshaft elsewhere.

Oil leaks from the side of the main cap and the block are becoming common. Removing the rope style, and resealing that cap, EASY, but DONT touch the seal. Honestly, rope seals themselves rarely leak, its the cap to block that leaks.

I have doubts about that full circle seal with the trans in place, as that seal is knocked into a ledge created in the block and cap. OK, the cap can be removed, and sealant applied to teh face and sides, but holding that seal in place on refit, dunno. This situation in the snaps would be simple, as the trans and flex plate are missing. Standard situation for seal replacement if it were leaking.

As I understand it, it is not possible to change the rope without removing the crankshaft
As Grant said, it's 1992 with lip seal EBC2101.

The garage has a beautiful wooden floor and drops of oil, not beautiful.

More pictures will be tomorrow.

Third day!

That's how I hung up the engine.

My chemical man worked all night.
Original gaskets, "0"rings, Bentley rear seal. This is the only thing that never leaks on a Bentley!
Pumped under pressure sealer

New "0"rings to prevent internal leaks
One ring on the pressure pipe was like plastic.
Problem was with ring on the sunction side .

Right is old, left is new
I found a new one the right size.
Thank you to our friend how to check the lower pan. All is on the right place.

That's the end of the day. And then we need spare parts. Anti roll bar bush And engine mounts. That'll be tomorrow.

Well done.

I simply went to the local bearing/seal supplier, and got the Viton spec in the size needed, NOTHING special at all, its just an o/ring.

Well found on those o/rings, sadly, they are the weak link in an awesome system.

Man you work fast, this would have taken me weeks.
First time I have seen a post of this done, looks a million dollars now, when this is done you will deserve 24 beers!
Have you done work like this before? It looks like a scary job to undertake.
Great write up.... makes it look do able!

How much oil was leaking?

So this would be the procedure for all rear seals leaks to be fixed?

Fourth day.
Today I received the engine mounts and antiroll bushings.
I was able to put gearbox and secure front suspension.
Is tired!

Today ordered all seals for the top.
Gaskets and half moons of valve covers sweat.
It is necessary to finish everything as it should.

Duke,

ONLY if you have the full circle rear main seal.

The rope is a 100% different attack. That rqiores the crankshaft OUT.

BUT

The Injection of sealer down the sides of the cap remains the same.
