Not sure I understand your problem......

You will not get anything like "cold" air inside an XJS unless your A/C is working. The car generates so much heat that there is no cold air getting in to the cockpit (It all gets heated by the car), even if it is cold outside.

The climate control system will direct air to the feet and to the screen most of the time. It only directs air to the center vent when you set the temp to max A/C.

Not having A/C is one issue, not having the center vent working is another issue. Which one do you have ? (or are you trying to ask about a different issue ?)

If you have a lot of flow on the defrost side when it isn't selected and your car is hot, then the blend doors must be stuck in some fashion as to allow some heat in. Have fun tearing the dash apart mate

There are lots of things that can go wrong with the aircon, so a bit more diagnosis would be a help. Are sure the car is properly charged with aircon gas and that the compressor, condensor radiator and dryer are all working properly? If not best to get these items fixed or checked first. Assuming this is OK, a few questions:

First warm up the car, the aircon will not start at all until the car is warmish. Your car should have the Delanaire mark III unit. Set the RH knob to auto (nine o clock position). If it is a mark III, the LH knob should pull out with a click. This puts the system into manual override and should give you full cold. See if it does.

Secondly, the LH knob can be pushed in and set to full cold, 12 o clock position, (full anticlockwise). This should produce cold air. Does it?

Thirdly, the RH knob if turned to 12 o clock (full clockwise) should give you full hot air and full fan through the defrost vents at the bottom of the screen. Does it?

In auto mode the fan speed is selected by the system automatically. As someone mentioned, the slide control varies the proportion of cold going to the upper vents a bit.

Greg

Yep, it's a common problem on the XJS. Even though thats not working, you should still be able to get air to come out of the center vents (even though its not cooled)...... does this happen if you set the temperature to full cold ?

I know the temp won't change, but do you at least get air coming out ? (meaning the vents are opening)

Well...... the good news is your center vent system is working, so that 1 less thing you need to fix. Good luck with the rest of it !
