Assuming you have the V12, It's probably filling up the expansion tank and the radiator via the lower radiator hose. The V12 cooling system is a dual pass system meaning there's 3 hoses going to the radiator- 2 inputs up top, one output on the bottom from rad to water pump.

Can you better describe what you mean when you say you put watter in the upper hose? What is the upper hose?

Are you saying you are putting water into the hose that you disconnected from the radiator and the water is going into the engine?

That illustration is not correct. Water flows from the engine to the radiator through both of the upper hoses and out the radiator back to the engine through the bottom radiator hose. As I said before, the xjs uses a dual pass radiator. I suggest you read Kirby Palm's "Experience in A Book" (Available for free online). It contains all the info you'll ever need about your cooling system.

P.S. It looks like your fuel lines are all original and therefore on borrowed time. BEWARE. They WILL burst and start a fire! Replacing all fuel hoses should go to the top of your to-do list. I learned the hard way once.

Correct both thermostats will be closed so flushing up those hoses will do nothing

When I flushed mine, I removed BOTH top hoses from the radiator, inserted a garden hose into the radiator, stared the engine and turned on the garden hose. When the warms up the thermostats will open and the water will come out both hoses.
