Default Where to find a boot cover for a 96 XJS? (and other questions)

I received delivery of a 1996 XJS a few days ago that I bought slight unseen at an auction held 1300 miles from where I live (impulsive- I know). This is my first Jaguar.
Upon arrival there are a couple of obvious things missing including the boot cover. The color code for the interior is NDR (cream). The exterior is CFS (Carnival Red). If any members have replaced their boots and you tell me did you have them made or were you able to find an original? Were the originals vinyl or cloth? I have seen a company based in Northern California on Ebay that makes vinyl ones. Has anyone here tried them and, if so, were they happy with looks and quality.

Another missing item is the proper battery/relay box/pump cover from the trunk (grey carpeted). Oddly, there is a cover for the battery that leaves the relay box and pump exposed. This cover may be from a another year or a European XJS with the relays and pump in another location.

I had the XJS delivered by transport truck and when it arrived I saw that the battery had slid completely out of the tray. The battery clamp was there but no bolts at all holding the clamp on. Does anyone know the correct size for the bolts?

I know the above items are not the most important things I should be concerned about but the way it has worked out I will not have a chance to check out the car mechanically until the spring. I just received the title to it today and snow (with associated road salt) is forecast for tomorrow. I cleaned the car up from the transport, waxed it and put it away in my garage to admire for the winter.

I would greatly appreciate any information anyone can provide regarding the above.

Thanks

Harro10,

Nice colour combination!

As it's a 1996MY and you're in the US, I'm guessing this must be a 4 litre car? In which case the hood cover would have been vinyl.

It also sounds as if someone has put a battery cover from a Coupe in there. Naturally, in the Coupe there is nothing above the battery so the cover is much smaller.

Good luck with sourcing the items.

Cheers

Paul

Yes, it is the 4L engine and that does make sense about the incorrect battery cover being from a coupe.
Thanks for the letting me know that the original boot cover material was vinyl in 1996.

Just checked on my 94 and the bolt size is metric - M 8x1.25 flange head bolt

Boot covers sometimes come up on ebay - that is where I got mine

Try Pauls Jaguar in Florida. He specializes in XJS interiors. I have had seat covers made by him and they were a perfect match to OEM. I believe they bought up much of the stocks of interior parts when Jaguar was clearing them out a few years ago.

If you phone ( probably best) expect to leave a message, but they will call you back. 561-367-0525

Thanks, stuizzy. I bought two of those size bolts and they worked perfectly for the battery clamp.

I found a convertible boot cover in the correct color on Ebay. It is purported to be in good condition and appears to be so in the pictures. We will see when it arrives.

I have not purchased a trunk battery/pump cover yet. I might hold of on that until I see what mechanical issues may have to be addressed. That is unless OCD gets the better of me.

Thanks, Jagboi64, for the Paul's Jaguar tip. I will keep that info for the future.

Hi; i have a 94 xjs convertible and i am considering recovering the front seats..the color is barley. I understand that pauls is the place to buy the covers.. i cannot do it myself and would have to send it to a shop to do.. my question is.. how much labor is involved in redoing the seats and is it your understanding that pauls is the best place to buy the covers. I thank you in advance

battery/relay box/pump cover from the trunk (grey carpeted).

From what I remember the relays were not covered.

I have what I think is a complete boot carpeting set in grey.
The correct bolts for the battery hold down should be easy for me to find.
When I dismantled my 94 coupe parts car I saved tons of fasteners.
I also saved as many components as I could store in my parts bins.
I don't get on the computer as often as I used to so call or text me @ 650-455-1110.

I don't think there is that much labour involved. I bought new seat covers from Paul's and they were 100% OEM correct, I was very pleased with the quality. I had a local auto upholsterer do that work, and it wasn't a huge amount of labour, I had them back the next day.

Actually the battery and relay tray were all covered up with one large molded cover that has two quarter turn release knobs on the front. They snap in to lock and turn to release. The receptacles for them are on the tray edge. See pic below. This pic is form the internet and shows both knobs missing. They are difficult to find/purchase. They are supposed to have retaining clips to keep them in their respective holes. The retaining clips fall off from the back and get lost.

I was able to find the battery/relay cover and had it shipped to me. Yes, it was missing the the retaining knobs but I can live with that.
Thanks all.

I may have some of those quarter turn fasteners in my parts bin.
