The one thing I like pointing out to other people, that 40 years ago we had!4 wheel disk brakes, fuel injection, independent suspension, climate control, cruise control and every other mod con that manufactures today boast about having or have as a special feature, It was simply too far advanced for its time.

Personally I cant see why we should compare it to any of the cars today its like chalk and cheese, want to go quick buy a Tesla, want to be a "boy racer" VW GTi, or some other blowfly or ride on mower, want a classic preserve your XJS.

Funny thing is every time we take the old girl out I must get every person and their self driven lawn mower's wanting to take me on, I know I will loose if I did, so I don’t bother. I do get my own back when we stop and so many people comment "that’s such a cool car" as they hop back onto their mowers mow away.

Exactly.

Compared to modern cars the XJS "isn't" a lot of things. But we love the XJS for what it is, not for what it isn't.

Right?

Cheers

The problem is speed limits. Up to 60 mph or so, lots of cars these days are about as fast as a well sorted V12 XJS. Above 90mph, very, very, few. In an earlier incarnation, with a mate on board, a VW GTI gave us grief at about 110. It just disappeared as we hit 140 and were still accelerating hard. Our cars' age shows in that they were made for high speeds in an era when you could really use those capabilities, and its aerodynamics really count at those speeds!

I started collecting them, so that makes them a collector car!
They made 21,500,000 VW Beetles and the earliest models are now expensive collectibles.
So quantity alone does not determine collectibility.

Yeah ,lot of fancy do dads, 1/2 the time they dont work when you need them.

my take on British engineering , is they are some of the best mechanical engineers, but close to the worst electrical engineers!

I can only agree you with you, but you must admit for its time it was well above anything being offered and still on today’s standards it still would compare on what’s being offered. Look at today’s cars, and what they offer, besides all the electronic functionality ( that was not available in the 70's), their mechanical components is well on pare or even lesser than than a car built and designed 40 years past? Electrically the car is flawed, sorry to say we all no that, as Lucas the Prince of darkness rears his ugly head, but the principle and what they wanted to achieve then was cutting edge. Imagine if all the electrics was Japanese, or German. Wow, would it be worth more?

Personally, as a classic it is becoming one and yes they will be worth $ in the near future if not sooner. Since I bought mine I think they have doubled if not tripled as an average price, but as I wrote in previous thread I do encourage more owners to do the Chev convert or do whatever butchery to theirs as it simply improves the value of mine . HaHaHa
