Default Wiper electrical help please

I’m having problems with the wipers on my 89 5.3. They won’t turn off! They run on normal speed ok and go faster if you move them up to the next speed, they drop back down to normal but don’t turn off in the next position. With the stalk in the intermittent position they still run non stop. I have tried another stalk but no change. Anyone else had this problem or can suggest a cause. As usual many thanks in advance

Seems to be a common problem. I will take it to the local auto electrician as electrics aren't really my thing. Thanks

Is the problem that the wipers run non-stop in the intermittent position, or is it that the wipers won't turn off in the off position? Or is it both? It could be that there's a problem with the park signal from your wiper motor.
I haven't had this problem, just the more common (?) issue of the wipers not returning to the park position when the wiper switch is turned off. This is caused by the switch being made by Lucas.

Yes it's both you describe. What's the best way to solve it. Mines electrolux I believe.

Brinny
There is a relay in the circuit, it would be worth checking that it is not stuck on.

Managed to have ago at this today. As you can see the mechanism is in the park position but the micro switch is out of adjustment. Not to mention a lot of crap. Anyway re adjusted and put a packet in to keep things right. Had a good clean up including earth so fingers crossed. Need to replace some washer pipe so will hopefully get to try it out tomorrow. Thanks all.

Refitted the motor after adjusting the micro switch and all functions work perfectly. Took other posters advice and glued a cocktail stick between the casing and the plastic to give it a bit more strength. Not a bad job really and certainly very satisfying when it all works. Need to sort washers now!,

Hi Brinny
Is the wiper sytem the electrolux set up? Do you have the heated washer jets?
Inside the wiper motor gear box there is a micro switch operated by a cam which stops the wipers and sets the park position on the intermittent postion do the wipers stop/ pause?

Hi brinny
It looks like the Electrolux set up, if you losen the screw in the bottom left you can move the micro swtich to engage the cam.
It's a fairly straight forward to completely strip and refurbish evrything even taking the motor apart.

Thanks
I had to strip mine down completely a few weeks ago because of a grinding noise it turned out the field magnet had become detached ( unglued) from the motor casing and was attached to the armature.
If it happens again I would definitely recommend a complete strip down and rebuild fairly straight forward if you take your time.
Cheers

Hi Brinny,
I'm having major problems with this too. My wipers run, at normal speed and faster but not intermittent and they do not park either. On intermittent they just run normally.
I have checked the stalk, all looks good although I didn't open the stalk up, rivets :/
I found and check the relay, but I did not open the relay.

Can I ask what the image you posted is of? Where can I find that??? I think I have the lucas setup my car is older.

Would really appreciate any help, I need the park function for sure.

Okay thanks

There is a wiper delay unit (an intermittent relay) in the system. I would see if this is in fact working as a first step. You may find the attached useful, it id from the HE repair manual.
