Default Workshop / Haynes manual equivalent

Hi all,

New member here so hello hope you are all well.

I have just got an XJS 1992 coupe manual (as my username may hint at haha) and there doesn't seem to be a Haynes manual or similar for it available.

Might be a stupid newbie question but what does everyone else do, as I am quite used to using a Haynes or Workshop guide for working on my cars or at least something with nice exploded diagrams for the keen amateur spanner chucker like myself.

I have bought the Service Guide (massive bargain at £60) but it is a bit limited.

Cheers.

Jaguar Classic Parts has the entire car in exploded diagram form with part numbers: Find Jaguar Heritage Parts Online | Jaguar Heritage Parts UK

The actual Jaguar Repair Operations Manual can be bought on Ebay in hard copy; and they are on disc from JCP. The Repair Operations Manual is the whole story in detail: (for example)
Jaguar XJ-S Repair Operation Manual with HE 5.3 & 6.0 Litre book paper | eBay

This Haynes manual (for example) does the XJS as well as the V12 Series III saloon:
JAGUAR XJ12 XJS SOVEREIGN DOUBLE SIX 5.3 PETROL 72-88 (TO F REG) HAYNES MANUAL | eBay

Finally if you google Kirbert Palm XJS book, or look on the Jaglovers site, you can down load for free a very detailed and generally excellent guide to the whole car, what to look out for, how to fix things that age, etc etc. It is worth reading in its entirety, but is more orientated to the pre -facelift models.

Meanwhile, this is a great forum and really helpful knowledgeable people contribute. Welcome
Greg

Hi and welcome to the forum / XJS ownership. I bought a '90 coupe last May so like you I am learning the ropes.

Greg has mentioned all the key references (especially Kirbert's book) but if you are a fan of hard copy search out a Jaguar Genuine Parts Catalogue. It is full of exploded diagrams showing every nut and bolt plus part numbers. I have found it invaluable in finding out where things fit and how they work.

Anything else just ask away on the forum where you will get most queries answered.

Cheers,

LeeP

Thank you both for your very helpful replies.

Re the Haynes manual mentioned by Greg in France, I have seen this one for order, but didn't get it because it stops at 1988. The reason I didn't was because I thought that since the facelift XJS changed quite a bit structurally and mechanically etc from the pre-facelift it wouldn't be worth it. Do you think it is worth getting anyway?

Cheers.

On the facelift cars (ie yours) the front suspension and brakes are the same as pre facelift ABS equipped cars. The rear suspension has outboard brakes (I think on your 1992 model) but otherwise is identical apart from diff ratio. The engine and ignition and ECU is identical to Marelli ignition pre facelift cars, apart from the fact you may have the larger capacity 6 litre engine. Cooling is the same. The dashboard looks different but is essentially the same, the fuel tank system is different as you will have an in-tank pump, but forward of that it is identical. So there is a great deal of commonality; but some differences. In my view, as long as you realise where the changes have been made, the Haynes book is worth buying anyway; but not essential if you have all the other books mentioned.

JaguarXJS1992,

Further to Greg's useful advice, I would suggest you just buy the proper Jaguar Parts & Service Manual on CD or the new more complete DVD from Jaguar Heritage. The Jaguar manuals include parts, workshop manual and electrical diagrams. http://www.jaguarheritage.com/technical-publications

Then you'll have everything you need.

I'm a bit confused by the £60 "Service Guide" that you've bought. I've not heard of that that. It sounds a lot of money when the whole Jaguar CD / DVD is less than that. Can you give us some details?

I'd also strongly suggest that you join the Jaguar Enthusiasts Club. See here: Jaguar Enthusiasts Club, Classic British Cars, Jaguar Owners Club, Jaguar Tool Hire, The largest Jaguar Club covering all models including E-type, S-type, X300, XJS, XJ, Mark 2, XK8

Good luck

Paul

I bought this:

Jaguar XJ-S 3.6 & 4.0 Service Manual (Official Service Manual)

Sorry not a "Service Guide" as I originally posted.

JaguarXJS1992,

I must admit that I don't recognise that as an official Jaguar publication. Is it a CD or paper book? It sounds unusual as a 3.6 is pre-facelift whereas all 4.0 are facelift. Is it produced by a 3rd-party company?

Cheers

Paul

I have this manual to (it came with the car). Seems pretty good although I suspect the DVD that Paul refers to has more detail.

Cheers,

My 1993 has inboard brakes. At 60K miles I have about 50% front and 60% rear brake left
I find the disk very helpful
