Does anyone know when ZF steering was first used on RHD XJ S?

Are you sure that your using the 'ZF' designation correctly?
I've never seen it used on anything but transmissions.
If so, it won't be the first thing I learned today.

 

Yes, ZF make steering racks and they were on all facelift XJSs apart from maybe a few as the old Adwest racks (which were used throughout the XJ and XJS range hitherto) were used up. Their main characteristic is that they are slightly less assisted and provide noticeably more road feel than the Adwest racks do.
If you want to know if your car has one, get under it and look at the rack. The ZF rack body is an entirely aluminium casting (Adwest a steel tube) and the ZF logo, a ZF in a circle about 1/2 an inch in diameter, is cast into the rack body.

Straight bolt-in replacement; but you will need new pipes from the pump.
