I have removed my antenna and motor and documented the removal for my memory. However, ther are two wires, one black (probably ground) and another that is Red/Blue. I have no idea where these go since I don't remember disconnecting these. Any help?

It looks like the Black one is the Earth and the Blue one is for the Power Antenna.

There should also be a Braided Earth wire in there somewhere that goes on one of the fixing bolts as does the Black Earth wire.

Do you have a photo of where the two wires connect? They have connectors on the ends. I have the braided earth wire.

 

Are you talking about the boot wiring to the antennae, or the radio wiring to it? If the boot, the black is the earth and goes to the bodywork.
Next question: do you have a large green relay as part of the wiring connected to the antennae?

I do have the green relay. Here are the wires that I have questions about.

 

OK. I now have the motor back in and it engages when I turn the radio on and off. The antenna starts to retract but does not go all the way in. When I turn the radio bak on it does cycle the antenna out of the motor housing. How do I get it to move all the way into the motor and retract the antenna?

 

I had the same problem. I thought, that green relay is bad. But was bad aerial. After month of "experiments" with relay, aerial, ... I bought new "Hirschmann AUTA 2050" from Car-Masts-UK.
No problem to connect and working w/o problem. 15 second green relay is working too and is all right.

those wires, could they be something to do with the spoiler switch that interrupts the circuit and lowers the twig when the boot lid is opened

 

Sorry, but - what is a "spoiler switch" and what is a twig (antenna mast?).

 

Here is another picture of the wires. Also the antenna does not go all the way down even after cycling it a few times. HELP !!

 

Test the aerial by hotwiring it to a 12 volt source using the wires FROM the relay TO the aerial motor and seeing what it does. I agree with an earlier post that the aerial is most likely shot. The plastic flexible that drives it or the teeth that grip the plastic are probably worn out.


The twig is the aerial, and the post refers to the fact that If an XJS has a factory boot spoiler, it raised through a hole in the spoiler. If you opened the boot with the aerial up, it ruined the aerial. they were fitted with a circuit that retracted the aerial if the boot lid was opened.


If the motor is running OK, those wires could just be redundant loom pieces for stuff the factory did not fit to your car.

I would put my money on something mechanical inside the antenna being the problem, this is a really common problem with electric antennas and the reason I ditched mine and have a amplified on glass antenna on the windscreen.

 

Hi. I think it's a waste of time to "repair" antenna. When is cycling, that error is inside, because antenna got only 12V from radio (when ON) to open and no voltage (radio OFF) to close. There is no component "on the road" from radio to antenna, which can make ON OFF ON OFF ...
I thought, that cycling was from relay, but I connected antenna direct to 12V (as said Greg) and the result was the same.
I think, that in the antenna is end-switch (maybe circuit, probably dependent on the current load in the end states) and it is probably bad.
I tried change mechanical plastic parts inside (it is solded as a kit from Hirschmann) but no good result.

 

Thanks. I am going to try one more time to remove the motor and look inside to see if there are any remnants of the plastic cord. If not then I take your suggestion and get a new unit.
