I recently bought a 95XJS 6cyl VDP. It runs great and it is really quiet most of the time. When I start it up in the morning you can hear the belts whining. They quiet down after I get about a mile down the road. When I start it up in the afternoon it whines when I start it, but as soon as I put it into gear it stops and runs great. Does anybody have an idea how to get rid of the whine. No cheese jokes please.

 

Are you sure it's the belts? Screech and squeel are more common belt noises, followed by a raspy type noise if they've gone dry and dirty.

"Whine" is something that I'd associate with an alternator or power steering, or perhaps even the transmission pump or torque converter. Check your fluid levels in the trans and p/steering.

To verify you could remove the belts and run the engine for a short period. And you might as well fit new belts on general principles if they are of uncertain age or condition.

Aside: what car do you have? "XJS" and "VDP" don't go together.

Sorry. I am new with Jags. It is a XJ6 Vanden Plas. I guess it is not a whine, but a screech. It does go away. I drove it yesterday afternoon and not a sound. This morning it was making the noise again. But I only drove less than a mile to where I meet the people I car pool with. This afternoon it will probably be quiet again.

 

No apology needed.

I'd tighten the belts and see if the noise goes away. It probably will.

Actually, if the belts are of unknown age and/or are showing wear, I'd just go ahead and replace 'em. Thye don't last forever and if they've been loose and slipping they've probably been taking a bit of a beating.
