XJS convertible cover
What is a good cover to use on a convertible?
There will be times when I will need to park the car out side for a few days when working on other things.
So it will need to be covered.... one thing it does in Auckland is rain!
When away on holiday where we are staying in our caravan it will need to be covered... again when its raining.
OB talked about covers that are breathable?

I've never dropped a lot of money on a cover, but I did use covers for several years. Each cover seemed to last about 1-2 years and cost me between $40-$80.
-The best in terms of waterproofing had an PVC outer layer. These had a soft polyester inside that was good on the paintwork, but tended to very easily pick up debris if it was dropped on the ground. Because the waterproofing held up, this one met its demise when the stitching came undone.
- Another type I have owned a few of are a material treated with waterproofing. This material resembles the backing you see behind or underneath some furniture. I've had these with and without liners. If you car is clean, the liner doesn't make much difference since the cover should sit on the car snuggly without sliding around, but I suppose the soft liner is better while you are sliding the cover onto and off of the car. Because this type is treated with waterproofing, the waterproofing wears away after some time. I noticed these usually go bad in about a year or so and you'll notice wet spots cropping up before the entire thing isn't good anymore. I also destroyed the waterproofing on one by washing and drying it at a laundromat.
- Another cheaper cover is similar to what you see for most motorcycles and what you'd get with a light raincoat or an umbrella. These seem to be a little more fragile in terms of the seams and being blown around but they are generally inexpensive and pretty waterproof.
Off the top of my head the XJS is something like 191", which is typically the only dimension you really need when looking for covers. They grab easily on the bumpers, be careful to avoid wrapping the cover over the hot exhaust pipe, which could cause damage and get black soot all over the edge of the cover.
Btw a cheaper cover with soft poly lining is probably going to deposit some sort of lint all over your top, so I would avoid those.
