Andy,

Finally took the time to sit down and read through all 12 pages, and I'm speechless. I usually consider myself a purist, but there's always exceptions- and this is definitely one of them!

Brilliant work, excited to see the final product. Keep up the good work!!

should have made this post earlier...
but did not notice until now... (as I was making a point to gather the pictures of your work for a condensed presentation to my wife... )


ah the gas cap... just a little detail...


no not the premium gas tag... or the leaf... the drain port....
man you have to have that drain port going to a hard metal line that exits under the car...

I like Andy's ver. better too... and would LOVE for him to BRING it to the Brit's on the BAY car show in April 2016... in Pensacola Fl.

I am making a presentation for my wife to introduce her to this wonderful work of auto-art...

As XJS prices seem to be way higher over here than in the US, you may well have better luck selling over here. There is even one XJS specialist dealer who has been importing LHD models from the US and selling at very high prices. Maybe they'd be interested in your finished article?

Don't want to brag but I also like my version better. The slopping roof towards the rear was accidental but turned out great!

You're killing me!!

I did not add a drain hole. Thought about it but at the the time of bodywork it seemed smarter to make a smooth piece of metal. But NOW THAT IT'S PAINTED I WISH I HAD!!!

C'est la vie, its a fair weather car and the water that pools there can be dried out. But on my next shooting brake...

I'm a psychologist during the day. In sports psychology there is a ton of research about making attainable goals and then visualizing completing them as a strategy for winning.

Well, my goal is to have this car ready to go by April 2016 for Brits on the Bay. Count on it...

oh, living with the car daily...
the hole is for splashed gas...
Happens you know...


and post paint addition is a snap!
1) drill a 1/16" or 1/8" pilot hole
2) take a punch of the correct diameter and hammer it out
3) it will be flared on the other side...
4) take a copper or steel line and flare it to match the flared hole
5) take some fuel proof (not fool proof) epoxy (jb weld or what ever...) and epoxy the line on the flared hole
6) paint and enjoy...
all flares and joints in the correct direction and no gas or water sitting there to damage your paint

sorry to be a pain....

Great ideas in forming the metal ring around the wooden oval plug. This gives me all sorts of fabrication ideas.

and you can see my daily driver... that I do my work removing little things that are not up to snuff... and fixing them...

The drain hole is critical on the convertible because the Lemans cap is mounted on a horizontal surface. I believe it's more to prevent water accumulation, than for gas overflow, or perhaps both.

On Andy's design, it looks from the pictures that his is mounted on a more vertical surface, so perhaps the drain hole is unnecessary or at least not as critical as it is on the convertible or the Lemans caps on the early series XJ6s.

Easy to test with an eyedropper Andy if you're still concerned.

insurers are more inclined to give you a hard time for performance upgrades
and intended use...
" are you going to be entering this in any races" no really they have asked me that in the past... and told me if I ever did enter one of my cars they would drop me.... do not get me started on what is defined as a "RACE" as
SCCA and insurers do not agree....

collectors car insurance... "agreed upon Value" how many miles you drive.../year
right now the XJS is cheaper to insure than our MiniVan...
less miles/year

To the insurer, it is an XJS, no less, no more.


As to the collision and comprehensive coverage, if a claim is entertained, it will be on XJS values, no more, no ,less.


Trouble is that this car has more ACV than a usual XJS? Fuss coming up? I hope not....


Way back when, my employer's sister company asked for help. Auto not their forte.
At issue was a stolen, much modified 57 Chevrolet. As an acknowledged car nut, I got the job. Done, just a spread sheet analysis. By hand at the time.

Surely you did not see that the poster Paul is in the UK, not US. The insurance companies in the UK would have a fit on the modification done on that car. Christ, tell them you have non standard wheels let alone body.......eeeekk

Default Electric fan and parallel flow condenser mods

I picked up an electric fan out of a 90's Volvo at the local junkyard. Various sources rate it from 3000 cfm to 4000 cfm. don't know the exact specs but the guys from various car forums love 'em!

I cut the shroud and added a section of plastic so that the factory Volvo shroud would cover the entire radiator. Used ABS plastic glue and rivets to modify and then sprayed it with Duplicolor truck bed coating.

I also shaved the depth of the shroud to make it fit-just barely clears the pulley on water pump.

Condenser is a universal parallel flow design made for the hot rod crowds.
