Default XJS Stub Axle Score Line ?

Hello all

I’m replacing my stub axle oil seals on my XJS. After cleaning up stub axles I noticed a score line on both (see picture). It is not deep at all but I wanted to see if this is normal ? I’m worried I go to all this work to renew seals and they may leak because of the score

any input would be much appreciated

thanks
JB

I could be wrong but I think what rides at that area scoring (if that's what it is) on the far left side of this image is the seal... I think the seal made that mark and the bearing runs on the level down. Again, I could be wrong. I looked for a diagram bit didn't find a good one.

One would think I'd know, considering the number of times I've had to do and redo my fronts. SMH... Slow on the uptake I am...

This thread may have some useful pics. I wasn't sure what to look for then, and I'm not sure now, so I will watch this thread.

If you run your fingernail across that line, it will catch?

Tks fellas for your quick feedback. When I run my finger nail over the line it does not catch. Would this mean it is OK or should I replace ?

I think it amazing that the unscientific proven standard for checking this kind of wear is the human fingernail... Amazing. I am often blown away by what the human hand can detect by feel. Not just in the car world, but in general.

And this is JUST me. I wouldn't sweat it. I would get a bit of fine steel wool or a Scotch Bright pad and give it a quick light once over. I would bet that that line would mostly disappear. I don't blame ya for being hesitant...

I think the fingernail test is a simple test to see if it really is a groove, or a line. In this case, I think we believe it's simply a line, or a stain. I'd try some carb cleaner first. Hell, maybe even some goof off. I suspect it will come off. If your fingernail isn't catching, its not a groove, you should be fine.

That's normal when seals have been in place for a long time. Best thing to do is either put the new seal in a little deeper or a little shallower so the lip rides on a fresh area. The groove is caused by dìrt getting in the lip area a wearing the metal over time. Normally, installing a new seal a little deeper or shallower is pretty easy.
