Default XJS V12 6.0 Litre Oil Pressure - What to expect?

I was out driving today and noticed the oil pressure needle was very occassionally making a rapid jump (almost flicking) between the mid=point of the gauge, and then slightly below the mid-point.

Can I ask if any of our fellow v12 6 Litre owners can give me an experienced opinion on what is "normal" for the oil pressure gauge and what it should be sitting at, so as to not have any concerns.

I haven't noticed any "jumping" around while driving. Oil pressure is around mid range on the gauge (higher at higher speeds) while driving, but at idle when warm, it's just barely off the bottom peg. I've been convinced (by reading other posts here) that this is normal XJS behavior.
Congratulations on the purchase. You'll love it!

Bill,

Your car looks amazing - I would have preferred a convertible but I do not know if any came out to Australia....And as someone pointed out in another post, any car built after 1989, that does not have a special "can be imported designation" is impossible to bring in to Australia unless it is done when re-locating (or returning) to Australia (as a personal import)

Thanks redgear, I really do enjoy it. In our summer that is. Right now she's up on jackstands, covered up for the winter.
I always did love the looks of the pre-facelift coupes. But when I saw this one, with the 6 liter engine......game over.

Jumping back and forth usually means a bad connection inside the sender.

On my 94 xj40 v12 it sits on 4+/- a needle width or so either side.

Cheers

hey Doug,

thanks for suggesting that...it makes sense, as the needle in the gauge is driven by a physical (analog) measuring set up...oil under pressure from sender line in contact with a sensor...

If I remember correctly, there was sometimes an updated sender that would basically turn the gauge into a yes or no gauge. If there was oil pressure, it stayed in the middle (regardless of amount of pressure) if there was no oil pressure, it was all the way left. I know the v12 sensor/sender is relatively easy enough to replace if there is a problem. They sometimes leak. It is under the turntable where the throttle rods are.
