Any of the engine driven accessories can give off strange metallic sounds when/if their bearings start to fail---water pump, alternator, etc. A mechanic's stethoscope comes in handy here. Or, loosen the belts and spin each pulley by hand. In many cases you'll be able to feel a rough bearing.

The drive belts themselves can make odd noises. An old belt can give a thrashy-type sound or even a knocking noise.

A cooling fan will make a terrific racket if the blades touch the shroud even slightly.

Cheers
DD

Hi Guys,
I too have a noise from the front of the (V12) engine which I have determined to be the water pump. The noise is a whining or sireen noise which is audible between 1,000rpm and 2,000rpm's and is loudest at 1700 rpm. It may be present over 2,000 but other noises drown it out. Also there are signs of a small coolant leak at the shaft area and I had to add about 8oz. of coolant yesterday for the first time.
I have studied the removal/refitting instructions in the shop manual and would like to do the job myself but would like to know is this job beyond the mechanical ability of the average (retired) mechanic? Should I worry about broken studs or bolts, etc. Car has 55K miles and has been well cared for. I am the third owner.
Would like to hear from any of your guys who have done this job.
Thanks.

Bob - as a retired mechanic you should breeze it tbh, I managed it as a keen amateur with nothing but a bucketful of enthuasim and online resource..

I've done the water pump and it is a pain, my '89 XJ-S had 55k when the pump went bad... Almost 6-8 hour job, regardless of book time. I am a retired ASE mechanic and it was a challenge but doable with time, tools & minor talent. I got a rebuilt WP from Coventry West out of GA. for around $100 rebuilt.

I'm afraid I'm going to have to do that soon, something squeals like crazy for about 30 seconds when starting up, I think its the belt trying to get the water pump moving.

Thanks guys for all of your input. 15 years ago I would have tackled this job without hesitation but now will failing eyesight and poor hand-to-eye coordination, I think I will pay someone to do the job and I think I have found him. I just hate to leave my Jag in the hands of a stranger. Will let you all know how it comes out and thanks again.

What year ? If it is the multi ribbed alternator you need to grind down the ridges on the alternator that are preventing the ribs of the belt from gripping and causing squealing. Can do on the car. Not sure what year the multi year pulley came in.

It may not be that drastic. Squealing is often caused just by the belt going slack and slipping because of age or the adjustment backing off; as the belt heats up through slippage it expands slightly and grips the pulley tighter which makes the sqealing stop, hence the 30 second noise.
If it was a bearing then it would probably squeal all the time.
Check all the belts for tightness.

Default Bad Diagnosis of V12 Engine Noise

I,m ashamed to post this message. My previous posts miistakenly blamed the water pump for my engine whining noise. What a dummy! Found an old Jag mechanic who straightened me out....the noise is from the radiator fan/clutch shaft bearing. (See key # 9 in the attachment). Jag dealer said shaft and bearing no longer available. Does anybody know if the bearing can be pressed off of the shaft because I may be able to match it up at a large bearing house here in the city. If the bearing can't be pressed off, does anybody know where I can find a new shaft/bearing assembly?
Again thanks for your help.

Bob,

Your post reminded me of one I'd seen a while back and I managed to dig it up. Hope it helps.

Good save! Beats a WP by a mile. Fan /clutch is a huge power consumer. Now may be a good time for dual electric fans on full time.

AllanG,
Very helpful post from the UK but now I have A few questions:
Does Jaguar part # EAC 3437 include the shaft or is the shaft a separate part pressed on to the bearing? The Canadian bearing he eventually found apparently came with the shaft which he had to shorten (with a hacksaw???)
I found a used one in England for $95. "Used" may be noisier than mine!
I will check with one of our large bearing houses here Monday and probably get a goiod laugh!. Will let you know. Thanks again, AllanG.
