2006 XK 4.2 - wont start
Hi all - a belated HNY !
I wonder if I could pick your collective brains folks. I own a 2006 XK Convertible 4.2 which has 106k on the clock- the car cut out and rolled to a stop on the A3 last night and will turn over but refuses to start. It was recovered by the AA and the patrolman said he thought it was fuel starvation and that he could smell fuel so suspected fuel pump (?) My sense of smell is crap so I couldn't smell anything !
Symptoms:
Car has been running fine/smoothly but over the last couple of days it wouldn't power up or start first time on the button push (but started on the second push). Could be coincidence maybe ?
About 1 mile or so before it stopped it went into limp mode with 'Restricted performance' warning light coming up and engine light, and wouldn't go above 50 - it was a dangerous stretch of road so I tried to nurse it to a layby but then the engine cut out and it coasted to a halt. No other signs, no overheating issues evident/plenty of coolant, no obvious fuel or fluid leaks
2 years ago it dropped a valve seat in No 8 pot, repaired by a Jag specialist (new Cylinder head etc) and has been fine ever since. Obviously it needs to be properly diagnosed but just trying to get a feel for what the problem might be. Does it sound like fuel starvation ? I live in Chichester and the specialist I use is in Fleet (Barny Jones - great company) so trying to weigh up whether it needs to go back to them on a trailer or whether someone close could sort it.
Any thoughts appreciated !

Mine did, the filter was so bad when I pulled it. Put a pressure feed on it and the output was very bad. I picked up an OEM locally, jacked the car up front driver side, filter in the cubby hole underneath. Undid the two nuts , squeezed the lock clips, bit of fuel caught in pan. Pushed the filter onto pipes bolted dropped the jack, started it up went for a drive and it was totally different. Issue did not return.

The service schedule calls for a filter replacement every 60k kms. I do mine every 50k.
I can’t imagine the state of the fuel used if it clogs a filter in that period.
Now, clogged cats will have the car throw a fit. I change those every 100k kms.
Thanks for reporting that.

It's actually 96 K kms, which would be around 60 k miles.
Thanks all - problem sorted. Coil pack on No5 had gone bad and knocked everything out - soon as it was changed she fired up no problems. The rest are the same age as the one that failed so decided to change all of them.

I got a cheap $5 dollar android with ODBII on it to read codes
I have the Panasonic CF53 with the 165.002 SDD loaded and a KESS application used to back up the ECM just in case.
Really helps t have the JLR-SDD software and the X150 service manual in PDF - I have been able to reprogram and recover modules with it when the battery goes south.
you guys hit on something - my XKR is 65k miles on it - probably should change that fuel filter
- CATS replaced a year ago - Anyone know where the old ones can be rebuilt? New CATS $$$
thanks,
