My 07XK is giving me problems. It's more than likely self inflicted but it's still a problem. I was changing out my upper control arm on the drivers side and moved some of the boxes in the attached photo so I could reach the nut. After I got it changed out, my car would start intermittently. I couldn't figure it out and then remembered I moved the fuse box and the little box above it around. I would jiggle those and tighten them and then the XK would start. Well now, nothing. The car lights up and when I crank it I hear a ticking sound but nothing. Anybody have any clues on what I should check?
Start with verifying available voltage. Use a voltmeter across the battery terminals to read the available voltage with the ignition in the OFF position. There should be a minimum of 12.6 volts for all the modules to function properly. If the voltmeter shows less than 12.6 volts, charge the battery for five hours at 2 to 5 amps and retest.
Once you verify the available voltage, check the connections on any of the wire looms you moved.
NBCat, I have 12.6 on the battery. I checked but can't see any loose wires. Can I check the continuity of each fuse to see if something isn't connected properly? Do you know which fuse controls my starter?
The starter is controlled by a relay and the brake pedal switch. Sometimes one must press down very hard on the brake pedal to engage the starter motor.
Try this: Press the START button before you put your foot on the brake pedal. It should start right up.
You might have inadvertently stepped on the brake pedal multiple times while sitting in the car before trying to start it. "Pumping the brakes" will cause the pedal to be high, and you may need to step on it with all your strength and use both feet to close the starter switch as @NBCat explained.
Stuart, that didn't work. I'm pretty sure I did something with that box. It was starting intermittently and I would wiggle the box and then it completely stopped. I can't figure out how I can test the relay or fuse when I push the start button to see if it's getting power.
