Default 2007 XK - reverse light bulb, how to replace

Hi All

The driver's side reverse lamp/bulb (assuming its a bulb) appears to be out on my 2007 XK. The manual covers how to access the other bulbs in the tail light assembly; but does not appear to tell you how to access the bulbs in the hatch portion, unless I am missing it.... Any special tricks? Or just undo any exposed nuts and start gently prying....Any advice appreciated.

Best,

Reg

There is ONLY one reverse lamp! The other side is the "fog" lamp. For some reason those weird Brits thought one bright rear lamp would help in fog, and maybe it does. Us Americans always think Fog Lamp in the front.
Anyway, one side is reverse lamp, other side is Fog lamp. Push the "Fog" switch left of the steering wheel, where the Fuel Door switch is.. then look at the back end.

Check the fuses and wiring loom for an open circuit as this has been seen before.

The reversing lamp is an LED and is not available as a separate service part. The inner tail lamp assembly must be replaced.

Wow - thanks, that was a bit of an education. Had no idea. My wife pointed it out when we bought the car, and other than the standard battery issues (now on a tender) car is great. Went out and tested it and exactly as you stated. Thanks, glad I asked before I did something dumb!

One of the most annoying things you are going to find out about your car is how many times you are told you have a reverse light out. Couple hundred people at my shift change over so parking lot is busy.

But it just shows people notice the car I guess.

The rest of the car ROCKS.

4.2L models have 1 fog and 1 reverse light, and 5.0L models have 2 reverse lights. The fog light is on the side of the car closest to the center line of the roadway, so it's always on the driver's side. On LHD (US) models it's on the left rear, and on RHD (UK) models it's on the right rear. The reasons are for better visibility and so that drivers behind you realize that you're not stepping on the brake pedal. It's common practice in England and other parts of Europe and the ROW.

I considered replacing my LH inner tail light (with the fog lamp) with the UK version (with the backup light) but decided that it was better to be quirky.

When I test drove a 2007 XKR, I made notes of things I found wrong with it before I returned it to the non-Jag dealer, including the 'non-functioning' back up light. We never agreed on a price, so I passed on the car.
I subsequently bought my XK from a dealer halfway across the country and had it shipped to me. As the delivery driver was backing the car off the carrier, I saw the same backup light was out! I thought 'Oh crap, thought this car was supposed to be in great shape'.
Well this forum set me straight too.

How do you replace the bulb when its out though? I took off the two nuts that are visible but the light housing still would not come off. Advice? Oh oh, is the advice going to be to read the owners manual?

Mines gotten condensation in it so I guess that's on the list too. I assumed the LED was molded into the lamp housing.

NO - read the Workshop Manual.

Graham, the original question was regarding the reverse lamps in the hatch / boot / trunk, not the brake / turn housing in the body.

So it was. Too many threads open and I wasn't concentrating.

Even easier - unbolt 3 nuts, disconnect and throw it away.

Food for thought for any of you pre 2010 era cars. I lost a brake light (several hundred miles from home), to discover you needed a 10mm wrench or socket to get access to the bulb.
When I got home and fixed it, I made sure to replace the nuts with wingnuts and lock-washers. Now no tools required if another bulb goes out...

After last winters frozen door window fiasco I've learned to keep a 10 mm wrench in the back for the battery terminals...

So... I had a right side brake light out, thought while I'm at it may as well replace both bulbs. Now I have two brake lights that don't work! I'll tell ya what, I'm great at this mechanic stuff :/. I checked the 5A fuse in the passenger compartment F8. It looked good but I went ahead and replaced it any way. Any suggestion or ideas would be appreciated.

Last thing first, revisit the bulbs.

I hope I never get that.

Our European standard registration plates cover the lock in the luggage compartment lid and they are stuck on!

If you get caught with ice on the windows they won't lower to clear the roof seals and the over current condition causes the electronically set 'lower travel position limit' indicator to set with the windows all the way up. Now the stupid car won't even try to lower the glass because it thinks they are all the way down...

The easiest way to reset the limits once the window will move is to unhook the battery for a minute. Trust me, you don't want to try and shut the door with the glass all the way up. I did find that in a pinch you can hit the top of the glass with the palm of your hand, have it lower a little and it'll clear the seals enough that it doesn't want to explode when the door's shut...
