Default 2008 XK Coupe Lousy Audio System

Am I alone when I say I'm disappointed in the stereo in the 2008 Coupe?
Has anyone improved the sound by replacing speakers or ???
I have put up with it for 10 years and it's time for an improvement
Input please!!!

Guessing you've got the base audio with no subwoofer or speaker in the middle of the dash?

It is possible to retrofit the sub and the centre speaker, and then you get the Alpine or Bowers & Wilkins branded system. The other speakers in the base system are also pretty cheap, same ones in the X-Type funny enough, you can get the Alpine or B&W ones and they will be straight swap.

It's a bit involved but not impossible. The nice part is that everything is controlled via the touchscreen and "works".

No, you're not alone!:-)
An OEM subwoofer I find way to expensive even used and I expect a Pioneer or Alpine subwoofer performs alot better for less cost and should not be to hard to integrate.:-)

With a good subwoofer you might not have to replace the doorspeakers but all depends on the listener preferences!:-)

It is very easy to change the tweeters in doors, I did that and even that helps a bit. Next I am going to install a subwoofer, not OEM. Should be at least somewhat tolerable then.

I wouldnt go to the trouble of installing the B & W system unless you hear it first. I had it in the first XF and the XKR and thought it was dreadful except for acoustic music. Apparently it is also good for jazz.

The tweeters in the XK are the same as the ones in the X-Type and X350 XJ.

I've made some adaptor harnesses so you don't need to cut wires if you're fitting aftermarket speakers or tweeters.

That tweeter in the picture is one of the Premium Sound versions, which would also be straight swap for the standard ones.

I wonder though if I bought a new pair of tweeters from Alpine,JBL or Pioneer would give me better sound then a pair of secondhand OEM?
Something should have improved over the years?

PeterV8: As far as I can remember, they were Grond Zero tweeters? They were about 100 euros. Perhaps a bit overkill, but I like them.

seems to me (mostly deaf guy here) that midrange is missing from the base system. Would it be beneficial to add a midrange speaker in the center? Long since gave up on trying to improve my audio systems since I'm hearing impaired so I hope the question's not stupid.

The premium systems that are Alpine or Bowers & Wilkins branded have a midrange speaker in the dash, it's still not as good as the system in the XF which has mid range speakers in the doors (they make a HUGE difference).

Instead of speakers we get the seat adjustment switches...

I have bought JBL GTO-19T tweeters and will test them during the week and see if it is an improvement.:-)
Does the base audio system have a low line out? Thought I might get a subwoofer.:-)

There is this circuit which changes loudspeaker level to line level. I wonder if I could use that from one of the backseat speakers: Bass notes are (nearly) always mono, anyway.

Is the standard Jad amp a brigde type output amp? If NOT, then this is a very simple solution!

Speaker signal to line level

I had those in the 80's but connecting one to these to the rear speaker might change the impedance and fry the amp!?

I'm thinking of disconnecting the rear speakers and putting a pair og 9x6" speakers or something similar in the "hatrack"(don't know the name of the black piece behind the headrests so you don't see down in the boot).

No, it changes the situation very little and does not fry the amp. But not good if the amp is bridge type...
