Default 2008 XKR Oil Consumption

How much is acceptable? I had to put 1L in mine the other day to bring the level back between MIN and MAX. The car was at my local dealer for some warranty work a few weeks ago, they said they spotted the level was low and didn't charge me to top it up. Whether or not that means they did top it up or not I'm not sure as I didn't think to check it when I got the car back so they may not have done this.

The handbook says that some oil usage is normal but doesn't say how much....

I've never experianced a low oil level.... But in my defence I change it every 3K miles. Still, I do look at it before and after long (1400mile) round trips and never had to add a drop.

Note: currently have 68K on the car.

I've got a 2007, and the oil usage has surprised me a little compared to my previous cars. Per the shop manual normal is up to 1L/1500 miles. The last time I asked my dealer's shop manager, he mentioned that these burn some oil, particularly with the supercharged engines and "spirited" driving....he mentioned 1Q/1000 miles as his gauge.

I've been adding about 1/4 quart per 1000 miles or so and definitely describe my driving as spirited. I've gotten over being concerned and just accept it as normal.

Thanks guys. Most of my driving is either spirited or town driving so I guess both may increase consumption. I did about 250 motorway miles at the weekend there, after topping it up a bit. I'll get some more, take it up to the MAX marker and check again every few hundred miles or so.

Hi, I recently did a 3500 mile road trip and had to top up with a 0.5 ltr to bring back to the full. Not bad I thought

Thanks V6. 3500 miles on the Orkneys, that must be 1000 times round the islands?!

My old 05 XJR used 1/2 qt every 5000 miles with 50000 miles on the clock. No spirited driving. I change oil at 5000 miles so no added oil was ever necessary.

My present 07 XK uses no oil between changes with 48000 miles on the clock. Incidentally, it's for sale
,bargain priced, at $26,900. I think I'll go back to an R of some sort.

Just noticed the location V6, my dad was an Orcadian from a farm on the North side of loch Stenness in Sandwick, my sister lives in Stenness now.

Went through the same thing with my Audi A6 from new, it was using oil at around 1 litre every 5k miles or less depending on how it was driven.

It drove me up the wall and I checked with the dealers several times to be told it was normal and may ease off in time.

Now after 6 years and 108k miles she barely uses a drop, but still worth checking every so often to be sure...lol

@V6, I grew up in Thurso (for my sins) so not that far away - just a quick run on the St. Ola (is that still the boat?) or a swim, if feeling brave!

Thanks all for the feedback. Looks like some varied experience. I guess it stands to reason that a fairly high displacement engine with a fairly high cylinder count should use some oil so looks like my observation may not be cause for concern. I'll keep an eye on it.

Washing / cleaning my car once a week or more, I always quick detail the engine bay ( after the first thorough detail ) its always very easy to maintain and incorporate into my routine.

As I'm under the hood as it were, its always a good chance to check the levels etc etc too.

Just a thought....

Gone through your trip report.

Great post - it was as good as having a holiday myself.
