Default 2012 XKR Lug Bolts Possible Issue Removing Tyre Change

Good Morning from the UK

XKR 5L Polaris White Convertible 2012 Black/Speed Pack

I am replacing 2 Rear Tyres and noted possible issues with the Lug Bolts / Nuts ?. Kwik Fit are booked in on Friday to replace them however should I purchase in advance solid replacement units and tell them to fit these back on instead of the original badly designed ones that shear off.

Please provide link to quick UK despatched replacement recommended.

Kindest Regards Tony

Hello Tony,

I don't think the problem is with them shearing (not that I'm aware of anyway) it's more to do with the steel nuts rusting underneath the stainless covers that you see - they start to bulge, making it difficult to get the wheelbrace/socket on them. If you can get a socket on them (19mm I think from memory) you should be OK. Regards Keith (Sunny Solihull - joke !)

In my experience they have only failed when torqued too much (with an impact wrench).

Make sure they torque them correctly, replace any ones that have some rust on the threads, and you will be good for years.

Tony, you've not actually given pertinent information in your thread opener, namely:

1) How long/many miles have you had it?
2) Have you had the rears tyres changed in your ownership?
3) Do you know what the correct torque specs are (widely available on t'interweb)?
4) Do you stay with your car and wheel/alloy change time and insist they crack/tighten them manually for the last flbs/nm?

Apologies if you're new to driving or to car forums

Throw the stock lug nuts in the trash and buy solid replacements. There are several threads in this forum, search "Lug Nuts" and similar, there are listings for Lexus/Toyota nuts that fit perfectly.

Hi Tony,

I just had 2 nuts fail on my 2010 XKR. The stainless cover separates from the solid inner and the socket just spins. I replaced with these:
Amazon Amazon

Inexpensive and do the job.

multi hex / 12 point socket should never be used it'll round off the head on the lug nut eventually

Note that the Lexus/Toyota lug nuts and those Davidmoss recommended need a 21mm socket not the 19mm required for the OEM. You may need to carry a suitable socket with your spare.

I recently bought new lug nuts for my 2010KR as the covers on many of my originals had stripped and would spin freely from the inner base. There used to be few options except the Gorilla ones, but now on Ebay there are many choices. I bought the ones below in black. They came promptly, are excellent quality, and are one piece so no more worries on getting them off.

I splurged and got the Gorilla units; tough brutes, those. Opted for the chrome-plated ones - they set off the black rims nicely...Quality of the plating is excellent.
