Some ideas:
remove O2, look with borescope
measure temp drop across cat
listen for rattling
measure emissions

Could you tell me how to check the cats other than waiting for them to fail ? Honestly I don't know... Other than taking them apart ...
How did yours fail? Did they break into pieces ? Did they cause a rattle in the exhaust ?
Also, yes, you are right I do not expect those cheap cats to be as high quality as the original ones ; but I can still replace the pair 3 times for the price of just a single original one.... So I am more than happy to take the risk.... I hope they will last 7,500miles .... that would be already quite an achievement for such a cheap solution, otherwise they did come with a 3 year warranty anyway !
I'll keep you guys posted on whatever happens in the future

Thanks again for your help !

Cheers,
On xkr if you monitor your boost if boost value start going up , you got catalytics choking up. You can always take them out and just look through them to see if good see through or melted.

Hi Marcos,
Could you share some feedback for JMJ catalyst? How much they last, their lifespan?

Kind regards

mrdf hasn't been on this forum for over four years. You'll probably never hear from him.

Hi there,

Never had a problem with those... They sound great, just need to use cataclean every now and then to avoid check engine light on the dashboard.

Best regards,

Marcos

That was a surprise! After 4+ years I guess the forum software still keeps notifying you of new posts?

A good surprise I hope

Yes, I'm still notified.
I've just been very busy dealing with difficult moments in life.... that's why I've stopped using the forum...
The car is also very reliable, so I didn't have to consult for anything else lately...

Kind regards,

Any time I see a failed CAT on my scanner, one of the first things I like to check is the PCV system, especially with any kind of boosted engine. I picked up an 04 Porsche Cayenne Turbo years ago for a deal with a smoking problem that fouled the CATs. I replaced the PCV diaphragm ($20), the Intake manifold check valves ($80), added a bottle of cat clean to the tank and the problem was solved. CATs are supposed to last the life of the vehicle, however oil fouling - among other things - can kill them. On boosted engines, not only do you have to meter when and how much blowby gasses are sucked into the intake and burned off under vacuum, but, under boost, you have to prevent positive air pressure in the manifold from blowing back through the PCV, pressurizing your crankcase and causing oil leaks everywhere. Regardless of how the system is arranged, over time it is prone to getting gunked up and stuck open or not fully closing. The result is you end up sucking in too much blowby and oil vapor which eventually fouls the CATs. I haven't spun any wrenches under the hood of my 15 R convertible yet but should a CAT issue pop up, I'll surely get intimate with the PCV arrangement.
