Default 5.0 S/C Brake Caliper rebuild

Hello,

I’m currently in the process of stripping, powder coating and rebuilding the brake calipers on my 2012 XKR and I’m struggling to remove the handbrake mechanism from the rear calipers. Does anyone have experience of this that could give me some tips to help me get them out?

I took them to the shop that will do the powder coating and they’ve said the mechanism should probably come out (they usually dip the calipers in acid to strip them), but I’m starting to wonder if the handbrake mechanism is even supposed to come out. Also, if there’s a seal inside, I will need to remove that before the Caliper gets baked in the over.

Any help or experience would be great.

Also, any tips on removing the inside of the piston to replace the seal(s) inside it would be a big help.

Thanks in advance.

Update: I managed to get the calipers stripped down…

The cage inside the cylinder (the last picture on my original post) will leaver out out with a couple of screw drivers. Not much force at all is needed and it should just pop off. There’s a spring behind it and then the main part of the handbrake mechanism pulls out. There’s a seal here that should be replaced when rebuilding them.

Here’s a picture of it disassembled…

Flipping the Caliper over the main cam shaft wants to just slide out but there’s a stud pressed in that needs to be knocked out first. It’s in pretty tight. I managed to break one taking it out but the other came out with some penetrating oil and gentle persuasion. This is the offending stud…

Once the main cam shaft is out, there’s another seal underneath it pictured here…

Lastly, here’s a picture of the two studs, one broken, one in tact. Does anyone know what this type of fastener is called? If I can get the remnants of the old one out I’ll try to source a replacement but I’ve literally no idea where to start.

Hopefully someone can jump in with some help, if not then I’m sure someone will find this thread useful when they come to rebuild their calipers.

Unless you hit a breaker's yard, you probably won't find one. If the XF or XJ brakes are similar, maybe it would be an easier find. Anyone else out there know about that fit?
If that fails, you could bring the good stud to a machine shop and slip them a few twenties and have a new one machined. It would take maybe 30-45 minutes to knock one out.
