Default 5.0L Non SC Engine Noise

I've asked for help on this in a previous thread but got no where with it. So here goes again.

Please, could anyone with an x150 non super charged 5.0L tell me if their engine is (or has in the past) making this sound?

The noise is quite a bit louder than the audio file indicates. Even with the bonnet closed and inside the garage, it is a noticable sound. I speculate that it might be injector noise but it seems much too loud and I would have thought Jag would have abated that better.

If someone with this engine configuration could just lift the bonnet and let me know if this is normal or not, it would be greatly appreciated.

Not getting any takers on input for this. I did some poking around the internet and was able to dig up some YouTubes on the same sounds from XF and F-types with the same non-SC engines. Everything I have been able to find indicates that it is the DI making the noise so it is quite common.

Hopefully, that is the case and that anyone else looking for this issue can have that question answered.

However, should someones experience indiate otherwise, I would appreciate a PM with that information.

Sounds a bit like low oil pressure to me, or something gunked up.

Cee Jay, Are you saying your 2010 does not have that sound at idle? I would think that even an SC should sound very much the same when idling.

If yours does not then that is the confirmation I'm looking for and will have to investigate the cause. I feared it may be a gunked up issue as I did not have info from the PO that oil changes were carried out by a qualified dealership.

Mine doesn't have that loud continuous ticking sound, at least not as obvious. Other than that, I really have no idea. I'm more of an old-school kind of guy, and these direct-injected things have me scratching my own head.

With the bonnet open on my 2012 I get about the same level of noise. You need to remember that a DI engine sees fuel pressures above 2000 psi so the injector need to open and close under these pressures. That's the sewing machine noise and if you couple that with a VVT system there is a lot of other spinning noise that contributes . So as long as it sounds uniform there is nothing to be concerned about. My 2 cents

Like Cee Jay, I'm new to DI but understand the issues of the fuel pressures. Call me paranoid I guess since the car performs flawlessly.

I'm still going to perform oil changes earlier than prescribed for a while since that can't hurt anyway.

Thanks everyone for help in putting my mind to rest on this!

I get my oil changed once a year at the time my NYS inspection is due. That may be anywhere from 2000 to 4000 miles. The dealer usually throws in the $21 inspection fee for free (lol) .

Well there is the well documented evidence of the 2010 -2012 MY 5.0 liter engine timing chain tensioner issue.

There is a slight chance that is your issue but probably not. Apparently it starts aroung 30 -35k miles.

That is exactly the noise that my 2013 Range Rover Sport HSE makes and looking at quite a few RR threads it is very common indeed to hear that noise.

I did a heck of a lot of research on this issue before purchasing my RR just the other day. In fact I passed on the deal 1st time around after talking with a JLR dealer service guy. A day later after confirming the vin range I went ahead with a better deal!

I am pretty sure it is not the timing chain tensioner issue as my vin is outside the range of vin #s affected for RRs. I have 82,000 on my RR.

Mostly everyone recommends an oil change way before the manufacturer recommendation.
