Wasn't there a post once about the levelling sensor being accidentally whacked by a non Jag service technician, that caused all kinds of issues including the lights levelling...

That happened to my kid's 2007 XKR, the bracket got bent down and totally screwed up the headlamp leveling. Bracket bent back and all was normal again.

I did check the bracket - everything seemed cool. in your son's case was there any movement of the lights at start up when the bracket was out of whack? Mine do nothing. I addition SDD says its not fitted with an HCM while my eyes disagree, cuz I can see the d*** thing. It is buried under about two hours of work and approximately 50 swear words. A problem I will tackle when I do the Mr.12v Mod at the same time. Fun thing I just learned, the clear flag that lights up yellow on the side of the hi power LEDs has a wee jaguar leaper on it.

Thank you another data point...Mine clearly does not at all, and no motor whine either.

Let's start at the beginning: what are the part numbers on each light?

It is possible that a previous owner replaced one or both with non-AFS headlight assemblies.

If they work...

Leave them alone!!

No doesn't appear that you're missing anything. I don't know why that''s happening. Here's a link has workshop manuals and electrical diagrams. Check them against your VIN to find the right manuals. I don't have any other sources for your model year:

Apologies for not seeing your post. Didn't realize the problem until tonight. So you have the wiring diagram and manual link now. This is the extent of my knowledge on the AFS. Ignition on engine off, AFS light will briefly display on the dash. AFS only works at certain speeds and only with headlights in auto mode. you seem to have found the problem though you don't have an error code or amber warning light on the dash. strange.
