Default Air Deflector "Clips"

Can someone explain to me what the purpose of these two "clips" are on my air deflector for my 2008 XKR convertible? To me, they look to be good for poking holes in the rear seat back leather! Third photo. I have wrapped black tape around them to prevent that. First photo. They are held onto air deflector support bar with small rivets. I am tempted to remove them but would like to what the intended purpose was before I do that.
Thanks.

My deflector is quite different. My flat hoop is longer than yours and it has two fixed metal rods that go into the seat belt slots.
You should probably remove those entire brackets.

My deflector for my XK8 looks similar to yours but has nothing on that rear edge. If they are not doing anything useful, I would drill out the rivets.

Mine is like ceejay's but I think that the flat portion is meant to fit between the seat back and the upper center section.

Those tabs are designed to fit into slots in brackets that are mounted between the seat cushions. If your car was ordered with the wind deflector from the factory, the brackets would have been installed. I’ll find a picture of mine and post it.

Ok, this is a page from Steve (theJagWrangler) instructions for his remote top installation (pictures are of the brackets in my car):

Good catch, @kj07xk
That method to retain seems a bit complicated for such a minor thing. I'm kind of glad mine has the pokey stickies out the back instead.

Steve didn’t know about those brackets when I tried to install the remote top controller, and I had a hell of a time trying to get the rear seat backs out. Finally figured I needed to remove the brackets. Sent Steve the pictures and he updated his instructions.
Guessing not many ‘verts opted for the factory wind deflector.

Me too! Just not when temps are below 50f because of Summer Tires. Those get nasty slippery on cold surfaces.

Don’t know, maybe your climate is different, but it’s nice doing 85 down the freeway in a calm cockpit.

Yeah, seems there are four stages to wind in the cockpit.
- All windows down.
- Front windows up.
- Front windows up, wind deflector up.
- Front and Rear windows up wind deflector up. <-- Doing this soon!

Which leads to the question:
For those that have the remote top with rear window control, how much wind buffeting improvement do you get with the wind deflector and rear windows up?

Truthfully, wing buffeting with frt windows up and wind deflector up, there is only a very slight amount of wind present up to 75mph, at 85 with all windows up + deflector up there is a bit less buffeting but the tire/road noise makes the drive less comfortable for longer high speed excursians.

One more - All windows down, wind deflector up. This is the one I use most.

If you already have the front windows up, and the wind deflector up, adding the rear windows up does add to the calmness and noise reduction. Not a lot, but it is noticeable. Also, rear windows up, with the fronts, and the top down, does refine the side view of the car.

Gracias. With the new rescue doberman addition to the family, I am going to have to try a 6th version.
Front and rear windows up, dog in the back seat (Need one of those hammock things, but that's gonna be a tough find with the seat pockets and middle hump) with no wind deflector.

There is a couple threads in here about rear seat deletes, but there is not very much room to gain in doing so. But it WOULD help the usability. Also save leather from claw damage.

Hope the dog likes a breeze.
You could make your own custom deflector, by finding some fine meshed material, like the real deflectors, and stretch it across the gap between headrests and down to the center drive shaft hump. Should perform similarly to a wind deflector for the front of the cockpit, while leaving the rear seat space unaffected.
