I wonder if the J Gate had replaced the hockey puck shifter, would you think the J Gate looked better?
Newer is often perceived as being better looking. That's why you don't see older women in advertisements, unless they're selling Depends or other products for old folks.
I haven't seen a 5.0L XKR with an interior that I like better than the two-tone leather and wood interior of my 2009 4.2L XKR. Tastes vary, and that's why Jaguar offered black with tin foil.
I like it stylistically more than it being "New". That being said, you car is stunning!

I have to agree with you there. There is a sense of occasion with the rotary gear selector and it is neat.
The later cars seem to use some better materials too and the suspension is also a big step forwards. Appears a bit stiffer maybe but it makes the car more agile at almost no cost to comfort. In typical Jaguar way, the later cars got better and better built even though they appear similar.
Colour is a personal thing and I do like the two-tone interiors with the darker uppers. I also feel that the later dark aluminium of the later cars suits the feel of an XKR much better than any of the woods. However, I wouldn't dream of replacing the wood in the S-Type
