Black paint colours and code
I'm getting some trim painted tomorrow.
My code on the door label is PEF which I'm sure is midnight black on the 2008 and its metallic. .
Are there any variations of this colour and different names? I notice on the paint code web sites that some call it black metallic in different years.
I'm just dropping the panels off so want to make sure no confusion with the PEF code!
Cheers guys

Generally when Jaguar changes the formulation of a colour, the three letter code also changes - so the code on the door label (PEF) will be correct for your car. Assuming that your car has not been sun-abused, that it has always been kept waxed, there should be no problem in matching the paint. Several months ago an SUV backed into my X-Type wagon, doing several thousand dollars of damage to the front end. The grille had to be replaced and the bumper and bonnet and one front fender had to be repainted (Jaguar Racing Green). The shop matched the paint by code and the result was and is indistinguishable from new, with absolutely no colour or gloss variance from newly-painted to factory-painted panels. But the quality of the shop is also a factor to be considered.
Swisstone,
I have PEF as my color code on a US model XK. The color is Midnight Metallic, a black with a gorgeous dusting of multi-colored metallic flakes. The other similar metallic paint for early XK/XKR's was Celestial Black Metallic (only available on the2008 XKR Portfolio in the US and more of a very dark blue than a true black) and Midnight Pearl, which I have not seen in person. Midnight Metallic is PEF, so you should have the right color match. Here's some more information about color offerings for the XK: 2008 Jaguar XK Colors | GTCarLot.com - Car Color Galleries

Paint CODE is the one to quote.
Over the years the same CODE turns up from Jaguar with a slightly different NAME. Shades of black are a good example.
The same NAME can also have different CODES and be very different shades. My 2015MY XK is British Racing Green (HGY). Jaguar have had many shades of British Racing Green from the 1950's onwards in both metallic and non metallic. Only the CODE can accurately determine the matching one.

Hi Jag people. New to the Forum so please be patient with me.
I have an XR-R 2012 MY soft top Canadian Mkt.
The paint code on the door is PEF which i believe is Ultimate Black. However in reading some of the form
posts it appears this colour was discontinued in 2008.
Can someone please verify it is indeed Ultimate Black
Many thanks

The name given to the paint colour can and often does change. Ignore it, it is the colour code which will govern the accuracy of paint/body repair. A very good body shop will also use photos taken directly from the paint on your car to take into account aging and possible fading. If the code is PEF, that is what will be used for any repainting.
Jaguar and other marques go through “updating” of paint names sometimes using the same paint codes. Likewise the names can sometimes remain the same while the formulation (and the name of the colour) changes. The Racing Green formulations are a good example of this. Just stick to the 3 letter code.
