I added a 2nd Jag to the family yesterday, a 2016 F-Type S coupe. I bought my first Jag, an 2007 XK coupe, four years ago and have loved every minute of it. I snapped a couple of quick pictures of my new F-Type S and added a recent one of my XK on the track at VIR. Enjoy! I know I will!
Initial thoughts:
Much firmer ride, more direct and heavier steering feel than the XK. Great drama in the adaptive exhaust note: crackles/burbles/snorts, etc. The vehicle feels much smaller than the XK, even though it is slightly wider. Being a foot shorter and with no back seats contributes to this feel, as does the steeper drop in the hood line, giving the impression of a shorter bonnet. The cabin feels snug, modern, and sharp. I love the panoramic roof! Clearly not as well suited as a an older gentleman's cruiser as the XK. I have never scraped my XK pulling out of my driveway, but was surprised when this happened in my F-Type. I need to go slow and careful. The vehicle is several inches shorter than the XK, but I actually find the F-Type easier for me to enter and exit. I'm not really sure why as of yet. When I test drove the XK, I said "This feels like a rich old man's car: it's perfect!" Having recently driven both the Ferrari Roma and F8 Tributo, I can say that the steering, handling, drama, and overall "feel" of the F-Type is closer to these (not the horsepower, mind you) than the feeling of the N/A 4.2 XK. I love both cars and for now, plan to fully enjoy both for some time!
I agree with the limited single drive I had of an early RWD F Type R. However, I think it being different from your XK is really a good thing since each car will be distinctive enough that you don't end up selling one on the basis they're too similar!

The early days of ownership will be the most critical time in possibly starting to wean yourself from the XK. As you start the F drives and continue to enjoy the experience the tendency to drive the XK will fade. As you play with the upgraded tech and the differences of the car it will be difficult to return to the past. Good like with your new car and enjoy the ride.
Do something new to the XK, like get one of those big huge Infotainment screens. Even just change the veneer colors on the interior, it'll spice it up a bit and make it last longer in your mind.

Well, as one who has owned many Jags, including an XK, and now an F-Type, I respectfully disagree with your assessment of the F-Type. The cabin is in fact beautifully executed - no wood trim, but this is a sports car. The full leather interior is sumptious. Problems? what problems? In the end, the F-Type is a sports car while the XK is a grand tourer - both excellent, but different.

Yes, I read all the forums. Complaints about modern cars, including Jaguars, tend to have a common theme: issues with the electronic features - and invariably the cause of the problems is low battery voltage. Once you are aware of this you can mitigate or eliminate the problems. Result? No problems! Other issues stem from a gulf between expectations of a modern car being a rolling ipad with up to the moment connectivity etc. and the reality that it is first and foremost an automobile, and in the case of the F-Type, a luxurious sports car - but a sports car, not a cruiser.
My F-Type, as an example of a modern Jaguar, has superb fit and finish (paint far smoother than on my XK, as one example); the interior finish is faultless; the handling and performance far exceed those of the beautiful XK in any of its variants.
So yes, I am aware of the complaints, a great many of which are not well-founded. Is the XK a wonderful car? Absolutely. But so is the F-Type; the driving experience in the F-Type is more immediate, more intimate, more visceral and entirely addictive. I loved my XK, but I LOVE my F-Type; I have not regretted the change from the XK to the F-Type for a single moment.
And if you think the interior of an F-Type is a "bargain backstreet" interior, the you haven't seen one with the Windsor leather ("extended leather") and all the options. My car has leather everywhere, seats that adjust a thousand ways (with electrically adjustable bolsters), every electric feature you can imagine....the quality is every bit as good as the premium leather interior on my XK; the only thing missing is the wood trim...but then this is a sports car and wood trim would be out of place entirely.
