The thermostat housing isn't typically considered defective but has a limited life. The techs recommend you replace it with your coolant flush and fill every 5 years. They are a plastic and subjected to high heat.

From what I've read, there have been 3-5 (not sure the number) attempts to redesign the water pump and I believe the last iteration is a fix. Others will have to provide part numbers.

There are a few solutions for the lack of gauges, none of which are optimal but all are workable. I would drive it as Shemp and Ranchero suggested. They do (replacement engines) often feel a little off and you should drive another 5.0 to compare.

I like the scan gauge. I think I'll go that route.
Thanks!

If you want English units (Fahrenheit, gallons, miles, etc) you want the Autool X50 PLUS. The X50 ONLY shows metric units. The X50 Plus does both.

I looked at the HUDs before I bought the Autool. Nice idea, except I think they are hard to read in many lighting conditions.

If you have an Android phone you can buy an OBD reader and a the Torque app for less then $30. Then you will get temperature, voltage and many other readings that you can select to put on the phone. Finally you can buy a magnetized clamp that will fit into the CD slot for less then $15 on either Ebay or Amazon where you will find the OBD reader as well as the Torque app. As a bonus then you can use Wayze or Google maps on a regular basis and not worry about updating the DVD GPS.

Also I think driving both the engine swapped vehicle and another unswapped vehicle is a great idea. By the way, you may want the selected car subjected to a pre-purchase inspection for both mechanics and body damage. Total cost for both should be less than $500-600.

I have several problems with the OBD - Bluetooth - phone solution:
1. The OBD/Bluetooth interface is always on and drawing power when it it plugged in. Even with the car shut off it draws power.
2. If I want to monitor the engine temperature I have to remember to start the app on my phone and connect to the OBD reader whenever I get in the car.
3. I use Google maps for navigation on my phone. If engine temperature is being displayed, I can't see the map.
4. When connected to the Bluetooth OBD reader it cannot connect to the car's Bluetooth hands free phone system.

For those reasons I opted for a dedicated temperature display that turns itself off when the car is off.

Nominally, and for only 15 minutes or so until everything else powers down also.

Your App can self-start, I know that Torque will when it sees the OBD2 module.
3. I use Google maps for navigation on my phone. If engine temperature is being displayed, I can't see the map.
Many people use an old otherwise unused phone for the OBD2 stuff. Besides, Google Maps talks to you, no need to actually LOOK at it.
4. When connected to the Bluetooth OBD reader it cannot connect to the car's Bluetooth hands free phone system.
Are you sure? My Pixel XL works fine while connected to both Bluetooth devices; car and OBD2. I've talked to people over the Car while telling them about all the cool parameters I'm watching.

Easiest way. Not as COOL, but it does what you need. Probably handier and less chance of a mishap your way also. But... does yours run off the OBD2 port? That's where its power comes from, so it'd be ON when the OBD2 port supplies power, same as the Bluetooth units.

The OBD socket on my 07 XKR still supplies power after the car has shutdown. I have just leant in through the open window and plugged my wifi ELM327 box in to the socket and was greeted with a red flashing led and that is on a car that hasn't been touched for 2 hours.

There are units, including the wifi unit I have, that shuts itself off a short time after the ignition is turned off. Just read the features of the unit before purchasing.

The Autool X50 runs off the OBD port and turns itself off 15 seconds after the engine shuts off. It draws a few micro-amps in the "OFF" state.

I am sure the X50 is not for everyone. It works for me and addresses my concerns.

I do have wireless ELM327 interfaces in my other cars for reading or clearing any codes that my pop up. The other cars all have OEM temperature gauges though.

Replacement engine, when done by a dealer, will be with a new OEM engine. So you pretty much got a brand new car.

This is however a concern. If Jaguar dealer auctioned the car instead of selling it on the lot, you can be certain there are issues.

Huh? You pretty much got a used car with a brand new engine.

A new engine only, and while being installed by a dealership may be an advantage over a Non Jag shop (perhaps), it's still a far cry from a factory install. I've swapped enough engines in my time to recognize there is a difference. Back to Ranchero and Shemp's advice. Drive it side by side with a non lemon car if you can. There's a reason it's going for $21k

Yes. Brand new OEM replacement engine from Jaguar. The dealer replaced the engine and the owner then put on another 12k miles before trading it in at a different dealer.
There was nothing about the motor being replaced on carfax, I figured it out after talking to two different Jag dealers and they both confirmed the engine swap.
Apparently not everything gets on the car fax report.

You may be right, but I have seen numerous 2010-11 XKs going for $22-26k with similar mileage.

Oh and I forgot to mention the dealer selling the Jag isn't aware of the new engine in the car. So they are selling it based on the speedometer at 60k
