Sounds as if there is a short within the alternator, so it is providing no charge and causing additional power drain (and getting very hot).

Thank you so much for the help. I will proceed with taking it off and will have it tested before buying a new one.

Once again, THANK YOU!

One thing that was strange to me was the alternator was HOT, like burn your hands hot. So was the negative cable going to the battery. Very hot when I tried to disconnect it. Does this sound like an alternator problem? Should it be that hot? Also, it smelled like burnt electrical components in the engine compartment.

Looks like it will be a major pain to remove the alternator.
Hmm, not good Kemo Sabe! Should not be hot like that. I suspect, there is an internal ground fault, plus with reduced output, makes me think a replacement is in your future.
Good Luck....

if you are not getting 13.x volts on the battery when the car is running.. it indeed is the alternator...

my car was delivered today after being in shipment for over 35 days.. (with the car unlocked and the keys inside).. and as the battery was already half dead when it went in.. it indeed was drained and the car would not start..

but we jump started it, let it ran idle for about ±15 minutes and after that it had enough power to start itself again.. so even when running for a very short time, it should charge enough for at least a single start..

Does anyone have any advice for getting the top nut off the alternator? Got the bottom nut and bolt out, the top one you cant see, but its there. You do remove it from the rear of the alternator right? this thing is killing me.

Is the Right Hand engine mount and/or oxygen sensor in the way? According to the service manual, they are supposed to be removed for access.

not in the way. I saw it said to remove them but I can get to the nut, just cant get it off. Sprayed it down with some liquid wrench, try again in a little bit I guess.

I am the new owner of a 2011 XKR175. It took me only until the very first morning of owning the car to learn of this design oversight. This very thread provided all of the information that I needed to overcome the problem, not correct it.

I do have a related question for the forum members, has anyone tried using an aftermarket battery monitor like PrioritySt*rt (not sure if there is a copyright issues on the forum) since the factory system obviously does not prevent the car from draining the battery.

Looks like a good invention and maybe it would be a good safety back up system. I wonder what the normal XK voltage drop is after the car is shut off and locked. If left overnight what is the voltage in the morning . This unit disconnects the battery at 11.6 volts but even at that voltage the car can start allowing the alternator to recharge the battery. I forgot at what voltage the ECU stops working but I thought it was somewhere around 9.5 volts so 11V would keep everything working , I assume. Anyone want to try this?

Hmmm, doesn't seem like a good idea for the XK, if it cuts off the battery in order to protect a starting reserve. That would mean all the modules in the car would reset to factory settings, the same way they do if you disconnect the battery for any other reason. So, you'll need to reset the park brake, windows and seat/mirror memories, plus the ECU will need to need to re-learn its adaptations.

It's one of those "ambulance at the bottom of a cliff vs. guardrail at the top" situations - prevention is better than cure.

It would indeed reset the system the same as unhooking the battery. However, if you follow the other precautions (charging and locking when not in use) Priority St*rt would not disconnect unless another issue occurred or we forget to lock the car.
