Interesting... I have the Gen 1, And it doesn't need rebuilding... yet. I have been changing the fluid every 60K kms. Fingers crossed. Best of luck!
How does one know if they have a Gen 1 or Gen 2 diff?
I seem to recall someone rebuilding a diff here, maybe it was @Ranchero50 in his ‘Green Turtle…’ thread?

If you have a 4.2l regardless of it being R or n/a and in the x150 chassis/range it's definitely a gen2.
They were also fitted to
Xf , xj , s-type however to my knowledge no 4.0 ever came gen 2 (they were gen 1) only the 4.2's & 3.9's from Thunderbird & 03-06 Lincoln Ls received them.
I just checked the links they're for a completely differential (although in their specific application they went 80ft lbs/ 108nm on bearing carrier caps)
sorry Steve, meant to take the readings from the FoMoCo 8" Racing differential, which ours is derived.
You probably noticed that in our workshop manual, not all the torques are provided.
Things are looking good oil seals installed for the CV shafts, carrier bearing cap torqued down and retaining circlip also installed just have the rear cover to go .
Yeah I was thinking i'll see how the new ratio (3.58) comes along then decide on which diff I'll put a quaife in .
* Note on setting pinon preload
Once the play is completely out of the pinnon work the pinnon nut in small increments , then measure the drag be very cautious as pinnon preload comes around extremely quickly stick to your "1/8 of a turn" procedure
