Exclamation Electrical Fan (Radiator)

Hello chaps, I have an over-heating issue which came to a head at the weekend. I have always suspected the engine was running too hot on sunny days and asked my independent to have a look at the last service, and he didn't find anything. So I have 2 queries and wonder if any of you gents can answer them, firstly I was beginning to believe the electric fan was not kicking in as I have never heard it running since I have had the car (3 years ish). However tonight I left the car ticking over on the drive because I wanted to monitor what was going on, I checked all the fuses and swapped a relay that I know is involved in sending the speed signal from the ECU to the fan. Low and behold I could see the fan running, all be it so quietly and therefor I guess slowly, it would barely blow a candle out, so no wonder I have never heard it, if this is the speed it runs at. So my first question, have you heard your radiator fan or like the operation of mine is so quiet you have never heard it kick in? Normally and electric fan makes a right racket and can continue after the ignition is turned off. The answer to that question will direct me how I try and resolve the issue, I guess it could be the fan, the fan module or the speed signal from the ECU, but your feedback would really help.
Now up until the weekend (although I have suspected the car was running hot before) I have never had any temperature warnings, nothing at all. Then this weekend queueing for fuel at Costco my orange warning came on followed by the scary red one and I turned the engine off. Luckily I was able to stay at the petrol station until things cooled down and I drove it 3-4 miles home and left it overnight. In the morning I checked the coolants level and to be fair it was below minimum, so I topped it up to max and it has driven over 200 miles with no issue (although the ambient temperature was a lot lower). So my next question to you all is why didn't the low coolant switch kick in and warn me. The coolant was still visible in the tank, but below the minimum marker, and do you think the low coolant alone would cause my over heating issue?
Thank you for sticking with me, I know it is a long thread and I appreciate your time. I look forward to your contributions.

Probably a good idea to monitor the actual temperature.
You could use Torque Pro on your mobile with a dongle plugged into your OBD port.
a cheap way to monitor various engine data.

Smile Electrical Fan (Radiator)

So I just wanted to finish this thread for others that may have a similar issue. After many checks and having someone from JLR privately look at my issue, I ended up ordering and having fitted a new cooling fan motor. All the symptoms pointed to this, but of course it was a gamble as it might have been a control issue. The gamble paid off, as I no longer have the over heating issue, also I have a hand held device I can plug into the car that uses JLR software and one of the functions it can do is send a speed signal to the fan. This signal can be from 0 - 100%, when I tried this function with my old motor fitted, the motor barely reacted to any speed setting. Once I had the new motor fitted and I wound it up to 80% it sounded like a jet taking off, so this is a great way of checking your radiator fan motor is working correctly.

What type of hand held device are you using to change your fan speed setting as I would like to have the same abilty for the fan when in heavy traffic and such.

Has me thinking... there wasn't an ODBII code/message for the failed relay??
